frist center free for kidsNashville is known for the numerous diverse activities that are available through the city. Sure, everyone knows there are lots of honky-tonks and nightlife options for the adults, but family activities also abound. Not only are the possibilities numerous and varied, but many of them are great for families on a budget. Check out this list of free things to do with your kids in Nashville for a few examples.

Fannie Mae Dees Park: Located a couple of blocks from Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, this park is better known by most as Dragon Park. The nickname comes from the large dragon sculpture built by Pedro Silva in 1980. There are several large sections of this park, including a play area accessible to children of all ages and abilities. Picnic tables, water fountains, and clean restrooms are just a few other features of Dragon Park.

Frist Center for the Visual Arts: Though there is a charge for adults to enter the Frist, admission is free for kids 18 and under. The best thing here for kids is the Martin ArtQuest Gallery. Here, they can explore hands-on stations with various activities. Kids can draw a self-portrait, do a collage, learn about animation, and even build with blocks. If you don’t fancy yourself an artist, there are staff members on hand to help.

Nashville Main Library: Much time can be spent at this three-story library. The kids’ section on the second floor has rows of books, CDs, computers, and a children’s theater, where Wishing Chair Productions put on amazing story times and puppet shows throughout the week. After story time, head over to the craft room. If you have older kids, head up to the third floor to the Teen Area. It’s reserved for kids ages 12 to 18. There area study rooms, chess games with tournaments on Fridays at 3pm, and Wii and Kinect games. Take advantage of the homework help, and enjoy a free snack on Wednesdays.

Hermitage Recreation Center: There are quite a few free activities here. Check out the basketball court, where you can borrow a basketball free of charge, a game room with pool and air hockey tables, and free roller skating on Friday evenings.

Next time you and the kids need to get out of the house and enjoy some family entertainment, you’ll be sure to have a great time bonding, learning, and expending some energy with any of these free activities.
