Kitchen Space is Important!

When clients first come to me to begin their new home search it is rare, if not unheard of, that their “must have” list doesn’t contain one or more qualifications for their future kitchen. This is hardly a surprise since the kitchen is a vital room that has to serve a functional purpose several times a day! Space and how well it is used are the keys to a happy kitchen. First we’ll take a look at things to consider if you are in the market for a new home and then look at how to work with what you’ve got if you’re stuck with a less than optimal kitchen space for the time being.

For the Home Buyers

This is your time to evaluate your true needs when it comes to kitchen space. Some questions to ask yourself are: How often do I make meals? What is going to make me want to spend time in my kitchen? Do I have dietary practices or allergies that make extra food prep areas a necessity? Do I want to eat in the kitchen or have a separate dining area for everyday use? How many dishes/utensils/kitchen gadgets do I need to store?

Taking some time to consider these will begin to shape your practical needs when it comes to kitchen space. Clients with no children may know they don’t like to cook on weekdays and really don’t need the large open layout kitchen that a family with kids might have as a must. They might be willing to forgo a giant kitchen as long as it has the space to hold their belongings and the appliances they need to make cooking easier. Those who cook with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables may need more counter space for food prep than those who use mostly convenience foods. There’s no one size fits all kitchen!

Workin’ with what you’ve got

Perhaps you are locked into a small, less than fully functional kitchen for now. You’re not alone! If counter space is what you lack try adding a rolling storage cart with a cutting board top or this nifty over the sink cutting board with a colander. If you need a complete overhaul, check out Houzz for great design, layout, and storage ideas for small spaces. Living small is a big trend so enjoy the creative ways you can up your functionality while maintaining a small, uncluttered space!

Depending on the age of the property lots of home buyers now are planning on a kitchen remodel. Seems to be high on the list of upgrades.
