Musing in the creative reaches of a twisted mind (mine), there seem to be some similarities between today and the 70's:
- Fear about energy prices
- Ugly fashion: Bell Bottoms vs. baggies; Exposed belly buttons vs. tattos & piercings; polyester vs. microfiber
- Lame duck president everyone is glad to get rid of: Ford vs. Bush
(CTV file photo) - Unpopular war draining national treasury and people's support
- Poor relations with international community
- Election year with no real frontrunner, or captivating prospects
- Terrorism
- "Love it or leave it" vs. "We need to change" (but don't know how)
- Financial markets roiling as models change, companies seen before as stable are exposed and crumble as we watch for economic news like addicts waiting for a fix.
On the outlook? I see this as time to innovate, captivate and learn. The silver lining in all of the uncertainty can be learned from history:
- Economies like everything else is cyclical (and local, to a lesser degree). This too, shall pass...perhaps like a kidney stone, but it will pass.
- We learned not to treat our soldiers like criminals for doing an unpopular job
- Challenges beget innovation
- Whoever gets elected, we only have to endure them for 4 years
- Energy concerns will again force us to look at alternatives and better efficiency
- Terrorism never solves anything, and those few who use it to make their point usually end up breaking rocks somewhere or pushing up daisies
- The polarization of societal viewpoints, especially within families, made us grow as a culture

The basic bottom line is this: our country is at yet another crossroads. No matter how dire the pundits paint the picture, our core is intact. There will be changes, yes. There is, and will be struggle. That is how we grow as a country, a society, as businesses and individuals.

Is the sky falling? NO. The wise caveman invented umbrellas when it got rainy.
Great...I think our next President will be the next Jimmy Carter. We need strength now!
