I have heard HORROR stories of people who did not check to make sure the homestead and mortgage exemptions were filed when they purchased a home in Elkhart Indiana, only to find out it was lost somewhere int he shuffle.  The penalty for not checking up on it is a year of higher property tax payments.  Pull out your files and check...as Larry says below, there are only TWO BUSINESS DAYS left.

2 Days left to File Tax Exemptions for 2014

I was at the tax office today and was quickly reminded that people were standing in line to make their mortgage exemptions, homestead exemptions and old age exemptions. For those that have forgotten or have not checked to make sure these exemptions were filed by title companies or mortgage companies. now is the time to make sure, because Tuesday, December 31, 2013 is the last day to file these exemptions to take advantage of the discounted payments in 2014.  Otherwise you will have to wait for any discount.

Some States are different than others, but in Indiana many of the Title Companies file the homestead exemption for you after closing, but remind the buyer to check after 90 days to make sure it got filed. Other Title companies have the buyer file the exemption. Of course, if you buy from an individual, it's up to you to do it all, or you don't get a tax relief.

If in doubt, it's best to check, but you only have 2 more business days left. You my have to wait in line, but believe me, it's worth it to save maybe hundreds next year.
