A Tourist Thing You Don't Have to Do in Islamorada, Florida

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

Sometimes, to get the true flavor of a foreign place, you need to frequent tourist spots and do touristry things, even if you don't really feel like it. At least that's what I tell my husband as I drag him from gift shop to gift shop. There is one art store in Islamorada that reminds me of a scene right out of Portlandia. Every piece of artwork in the store is tagged by the same artist couple, like Joan and David, except their names are not Joan and David. And it's horrible stuff.

Paintings framed in old lobster trap scraps, mostly. People must buy them. Just like people must enjoy Lorelei's on the beach. Read more in my personal blog today about The Difference Between 21 and 61 at Lorelei's Restaurant. Photos included.

Your husband must be a trooper Elizabeth; hope he gets time off for good behavior.

So far haven't been in any gift shop in Islamorada, nor in any other place for that matter. Helps me a lot. Florida Keys is a special place. And yes, you would have limited service, the notion of time is a bit different there but still not what you get in Virgin Islands, where time flows with no point of beginning or end, and immediately there would have very different meaning from here...

But I love to spend a week there. Kayak...kayak...kayak

Good grief!  That doesn't even come close to service.  I worked my way through college as a waitress at an all you can eat seafood restaurant.  Yeah, when I first started, I hated getting late tables and whined and complained a lot.  As I grew into the job, I realized that I made more money when I was pleasant in general, shrugged off getting the last table and served them well.  I actually got my first job offer from a man who worked for HUD for that attitude.  I was out of college, looking for a job. Got the last table after the hostess apparently had made he and his wife feel like crap for coming in.  Told them they had to order fried food because the grill was closed.  I said, "No.  It isn't.  They've cleaned it, but they can clean it again."  At the end of the meal I had a job offer for keeping them in the restaurant and helping them enjoy a great meal.  So not all twnety-somethings are created equal.  That guy is going to suck well into adulthood.

You need to send this to the owner of the place.  Who knows the waiter could have been the owner but it never hurts

Ah, Richie, you never know when you might find something totallly remarkable!

Hey Tom: The guy should get a medal every day of his life just for putting up with me because he gets no time off EVER -- you must not be married.

Hi Jon: It's much easier to kayak along because when you've got my husband in the front, well, let's just say it's marriage strengthing exercise.

Hi Chris Ann: I kinda doubt that young kids see waitressing / waitering as a profession.

Hi James: I have a feeling the owner already knows and doesn't care because they don't take reservations, so that tells you right there that it's every person for herself.

I know you are right, but I was raised with the philosophy that if you are going to do something, do it right and do it well.
