Hello, I'm Your Front Door- It's Nice To Meet You

If you’re about to put your home up for sale, I want you to open your front door right now; go ahead, don’t be afraid; take a good, hard look and while you’re looking, think about this. This is the first thing the buyers get to see of your home. They may even  stand there for 3-5 minutes while their agent is trying to get the lockbox open and the key out; and don’t think they don’t notice how it looks.

Will your front door pass the first-impression test?

Here’s what you need to really take note of:

Hello I'm Your Front Door-It's Nice to Meet You

  • Does it need painting? Front doors fade rapidly and a fresh coat of paint will do wonders so head out and buy some paint and a good brush to apply it.

  • If it doesn’t need painting, does it need a good cleaning?  Cobwebs, mold, and mildew seem to settle there.

  • While you’re checking the mold and mildew out, take a look at the weather-stripping around the door. If it’s cracked, or flaking-replace it. If it has mildew, clean it.

  • Look up at the cover over the door, are there spiders, cobwebs, or hornets nests there? Be sure to remove them.

  • If you have a sidelight or two, make that glass sparkle; if you have a curtain on the sidelights, wash it and rehang with a little more tension to make it snap to attention.

  • Make sure the door doesn’t creak when it’s being opened. There’s nothing worse than a creaking door to give the wrong impression. Remember the Addams Family.

  • Shine the hardware on the door, if it's all green and needs replacing, head to your local DIY and buy new ones; they aren't that expensive and will look great.

  • Sweep the area in front of the door, in fact, sweep the entire walk up to the door.

  • And, how about a new doormat too. (Thanks, Tom Arstingstall)

Remember, it’s the very first impression of how you keep your home: Make it a good one.

Hello, I'm Your Front Door- It's Nice To Meet You

Or you can call me, and I will advise you on the condition of your front door and the rest of your home. As a matter of fact, while I'm waiting for you to answer the door, guess what I am doing.

Excellent blog.  Curb appeal is so important, including the front entrance to the home. Sellers need to realize that their home needs to be in tip top selling condition.

Looking For Homes With A Smile

Front Door--Friendly Door.

No self-respecting host or hostest would stand at their front door wearing their "barn" clothes, while greeting the guest of honor.  I go to the trouble of shaving, combing my hair (both of them), polishing my shoes, and pressing my pants on such occassions.  Do I want my front door to look like a bum?

Cleanliness, Color, Construction, Comfort and Character  may well describe the considerations my front door should expect.  In return, it will proudly smile, greet and welcome its new prospective owners.

Great blog. Sellers get so used to the old door hardware and peeling paint.

Great points here. I always take a good look at the front door and front appearance of the home when I'm looking at taking a listing. It matters.

Good morning Toni. This is terrific and I suggested it. Wouldn't it be nice if we could live as if we were selling all the time? Happy New Year.

Good post.  If you were looking at MY front door, you would see that it needs painted.  Good thing it's not for sale!

I think it really does set the stage for what they see in the house.  When I see newer or nicer hardware on a front door, I always point it out to clients as well.

Front doors are important. I wish I had a buck for ever door that I have seen with rotting trim work, fogged up sidelights or locks that were difficult to open. None of which create a great first impression.
