Snowmen and a Little History
Is the ‘Snowman’ a Christmas decoration or does it stand for something else? You start seeing snowmen decorations in late November or early December and are usually stuffed snow people to decorate the house or are Christmas tree decorations so that would make you think it is only a holiday figure.
Most of us put snowmen out for the Christmas holiday but if you live in the snow, kids start making snowmen long before Christmas. I remember living in North Dakota and we would make snowmen about 8 months out of the year and they proudly were displayed in our front and backyards.
So when the weather gets really cold and it snows, kids and their parents are outside making a snowman and decorating them with hats, scarves, carrot noses, coal eyes, tree branch twigs and sometimes they are a reflection of the person living in the house? Interesting! And this can be long before Christmas depending on the climate.
Historians have found that snowmen were designed to reflect a persons socioeconomic status going back 10,000 years or more and found in non-Christian communities down through history.
I see snowmen as a happy and cheerful character that is a warm welcome to all that winter is upon us. Many will keep the snowman alive with patch jobs until the winter melt and then the poor snowman is gone….yes melted until another winter comes next year.
In 1950, Gene Autry first recorded the song ‘Frosty the Snowman’ which caused a children’s book, ‘A Little Gold Book’ and a TV cartoon show to be created. Kids loved Frosty and couldn’t wait to see him on TV every year and it is still popular. Now there are videos and DVD’s. I still watch it on TV every year and cannot wait to have a grand baby to share the story with. This song made snowmen very popular in the US and follows the Christmas season.

We see postcards, holiday cards, decorations, jewelry, clothing, toys, dishes, and collectables. The snowman crosses cultures and is very popular with everyone. I see that we make our snowmen with 3 balls and Japanese snowmen are made with 2 balls. Fascinating difference!
