As a kid growing up, like most of us, I learned the art of negotiating by practicing on my parents. They said "no" and I negotiated until I got either a yes or at least a compromise. If you were to ask my mother she would only sigh.
Not all kids are that way. My brother, for instance, just went along. My sister, on the other hand, didn't negotiate. She just refused.
We aren't all born negotiators. Negotiating is a skill that you can learn but like anything else it is much more effective if you have a natural bent and love to do it. That would describe me.
Nobody likes to go to garage sales with me. I will negotiate a $.25 item down to a dime. I would never pay more than $.20. Shameless, I know
Hotel rooms are another favorite. Behind that counter they have lots of little treasures hidden away. The only way I pay retail is if I don't have a choice because the hotel is sold out or some other extenuating circumstance.
I once had a partner that taught me the art of the scrunchy face. This face is used when faced with a "no". You scrunch your face up and sort of hem and haw. An excellent negotiating tactic. The scrunchy face cannot be ignored.
Have you heard of "the first one that talks, loses". That is a real phenomenon. Much of the population cannot stand a silence. Silence is a great negotiator.
The moral? If you want a negotiator whether buying or selling your house, you want me. I love concessions!
