What will 2014 Bring? Your Goals - or their Needs?
Life is full of surprises. In spite of our best laid plans, unexpected things happen - some good, some not-so-good. How will you handle those challenges next year? Perhaps a bit of reflection is in order as 2013 comes to a close.
Lets face it, we all need a business and personal plan if we want to grab the most out of life. To operate without a road map is pretty cavalier, and worse, can prevent us from getting where we want to go.
Therefore, let’s assume you, similar to the other successful folks in Active Rain, have a good, solid plan in place for the new year. Now, consider how that plan works, if and when, life throws you a curve ball.
What are your goals for 2014? Is it all about you - or all about them?
Resilience, a sense of humor, the ability to step back and assess, and solution-oriented thinking are all great skills and can help us through these periods. However, let’s imagine you can minimize, at least in part, the surprise of rejection.
Sure, there are going to be some clients who, for whatever reason, walk. That’s life. For the most part though, keeping their needs top of mind can help ensure a more successful relationship. Remember, real estate is all about relationships.
We’ve all heard the boasts of someone touting their goals, their successes, their designations, blah blah blah. Do you really think prospective buyers or sellers care about any of that? It’s quite doubtful.
2014 - An opportunity to focus more on their needs and goals.
Our job is to focus on our clients expectations, goals, needs, dreams, and on their timelines. It’s when we try to impose our plan on them that we risk a greater chance of rejection, or surprise. Therefore, it’s important to operate with intent.
Why are we in this business in the first place? Are we here to reach our goals, or to help people reach theirs? If we can become a valuable and trusted advisor to our clients, our chances of success (and joy) increases.
What will 2014 bring you? Will you be focusing on your goals, or your clients needs? It’s something to think about.
