How Bad Is It.....Candles

How bad is it to let a candle burn to the very bottom?

Red candle

You want to get the most out of that pretty glass enclosed pillar, but the less wax in the jar, the more likely the flame is to brush against the side and the bottom.  And, if the glass gets hot enough, it could shatter.  Even worse, without enough wax as a buffer, the flame could ignite debris, like a  match that has been left in the candle, which could cause a blaze to flare up.

Candles cause nearly 10,000 house fires a year.  So, avoid risking it by tossing glass-in candles once the wax drops below half an inch.  Throw out all other kinds of candles when they get shorter than two inches.

BOTTOM LINE:  SUPER BAD!

Kristin,

This is a great safety tip and warning.  It's important to keep an eye on candles.  Have a spectacular 2014!

I try to limit my candle use to only very dry and heavily wooded areas, so far that has worked out good...

Happy New Year

I love glass candles but I have issues with the way they burn. Thanks for the reminder: there is a real danger here.

Am I the only one who thought you were going with an analogy here???  As I was reading I thought this was an analogy for taking on more than you should.... doing too much and burning out....as in stress!  LOL!  I was surprised to find you really were talking about actual candles.  LOL!

As for candles....too many toxins for me.  They are dangerous in more ways than just fire.  I feel a post of my own coming on!  Thanks for the inspiration!

I am a big candle lover.  However with a return of my breathing problem from my mold exposure two years ago I have been unable to burn candles this winter.  I am not sure that I will be able to burn them again.  When I did burn them I always got rid of them right before they got to that end point.

This was a timely post Kristin.  I call my husband "Mr. Safety" -- he loathes candles, except in an emergency.  With all of our Grandchildren, and two huge dogs, candles can be quite hazardous.

Good morning, Kristin. And here I'm one of the bad ones that burn the candles all the way down to the bottom.

Good safety advice.  I am always weary of people using candles in my house.  So often they forget to blow them out.  Such a fire hazard.

You may have saved a few homes with this tip Kristin, we use a lot of candles in our cadott off grid office, we do burn the candles all the way to the bottom and the glass does break often.  Fortunately we always keep the candles on a safe nonburnable surface.

Kristin, that is interesting.  I did not realize that it was a problem to let the candle burn so low.
