Last July I wrote about my goal of doing 60 walks by next September. A fellow Realtor and I threw down the gauntlet after having trained to walk in the Komen 3 Day in San Francisco, and made the commitment. What has happened since has been amazing. We are up to #24, and are having an awesome time seeing different neighborhoods, walking new mountain trails, and stretching ourselves in ways I couldn't have imagined. And we are seeing our area in a whole new light. We'll reach our 60th by September, before my friend turns 60.
We began in Old Sacramento, and have since walked the American River Bike Trail, urban hikes through the riparian easement of Folsom, and foothill hikes in the Auburn Recreation Area. #19 was in the beautiful Arboretum of UC Davis, and #9 was around the Serano Golf Course (shhh - the golfers don't like hikers on their cartpaths, but we started at 6am), and #15 was along the old Auburn Quarry Trail where the gold miners hauled the spoils of their search.
We've seen Fair Oaks and the surrounding Sacramento area from a very different vantage point, seeing the backside of neighborhoods we thought we knew. We have both sold homes in all of these neighborhoods, but walking the trails of developments is a different experience from driving the streets.
Along the way, our numbering has taken on a life of it's own. For every hike, we find a different way to incorporate the number of the hike into a photo op. #13 was the coolest - our legs cast long shadows from the early morning sunrise. But #18 was pretty awesome too, as we found an old bike inner tube which shaped the 8, while a hiking pole made the 1. Leaves became #17, pinecones formed #21, and school room #12 came in handy. #4 was, well... we became flamingos.
I've even learned some new technology along the way. For starters, look at how cool Diptic is.... it's an app for making grids of your photos right from your smart phone. Yep - I have become "diptic simple". Right after our hike, I post a grid photo our latest adventure on Facebook right from my iPhone. It's so cool.
I have been slug about writing about our hikes, but want to go back and chronical some. This experience has been so amazing and our upcoming 37 hikes are sure to be equally amazing.
So stay tuned. #24 is coming up this Sunday in the lake bottom of Folsom Lake. This is one of the driest winters in our history and the lake is so low that remnants of an old gold mining town have emerged. The lake is shrinking into a puddle, which will afford a rare opportunity to walk on the lake bottom. Can't pass that up!
