If your electricity went out and the public water was compromised and you could not leave your home for a week would you be able to survive?  (That would mean having enough food, water, and candles for a week.)

If you live in the District of Columbia you should have received a guide book giving you tips on getting ready in case of an emergency.  When you think of needing to be prepared for an emergency these days you think of 9/11.  According to the guide book the best way to be safe in an emergency is to have a plan before an emergency strikes.  They offer the following tips:

  • You need to be informed
  • Make a Plan
  • Make an Emergency Kit
  • Be aware

Here are some websites about emergency preparedness:

http://alert.dc.gov - DC Emergency Information

http://hsema.dc.gov - DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency

http://ddot.dc.gov - DC evacuation information and maps

http://fema.gov/areyouready - More information from the federal government

http://redcross.org - The American Red Cross

We are living in times that warrant extra care and anything could happen.

Be aware, Be prepared, and above all Be safe.

It is amazing how many of us know we should be prepared, but are not prepared.  Life would be simpler if we stocked emergency supplies,  Karen

Thanks for sharing this. Reading your post reminded me how unprepared I am in case of an emergency. Thanks for the reminder. I need it.

This is an important topic and yours is a post that should be reposted periodically.  It seems like common sense, but I am surprised how many are not prepared.

Half my trunk is packed with bottled water, contact lenses, toothpaste, MREs, flashlights, batteries, etc. The list goes on!  Living in DC, you just never know when you may feel safer heading down the interstate and out of the area should there be an attack or other disaster. The side benefit?  When I don't have a chance to run by the store for that much needed tube of toothpaste, I just snatch one out of the trunk of my car!  ;-)

Justin - I think it is important to keep it in your mind.

Robert - You may want to look into getting a generator. You know trouble doesn't happen when it's convenient.
