The New York Yankees showed a lot of class, sensitivity and humility as they visited the Virginia Tech campus this week. The team made a $1,000,000 donation to the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund last year.

Today, The Yankees played an exhibition game against the Virginia Tech baseball team at English Field. Several players hung out in the Tech dugout, they signed balls and shirts for students and stayed an hour after the game to sign memorabilia. I can't tell you how much this is appreciated by the students, faculty and families.

It's been a tough year for the Virginia Tech family and these events do help in the healing process. As the first anniversary of the tragedy nears it's not getting easier; emotions are high and tears still flow. As a parent of a Tech student, I truly appreciate the outpouring of love and concern shown to the HOKIE NATION. It's okay that you won the game 11-0. What matters is that you came and made a difference. Thank you.

14 Comments on The New York Yankees at Virginia Tech: The Hokie Nation Thanks You

I saw this story on the evening news tonight and was quite moved. While normally I am a "Yankee-hater" I think it showed real class on the part of the boys in pinstrips! They even showed Jeter signing baseballs and sitting in the Hokie dugout! Bravo to the Yankees for their spirit of giving!

Rich, I still can't talk about this day without crying, it's too fresh. Kat was living in West AJ last year, two floors below the first shooting. There's been such an ourpouring of support, it's overwhelming. The Yankees' visit was much appreciated.

Debbie, what sucks is that it takes an event like this to bring a nation closer. We should all learn something from the Hookie Nation.

Debbie- I too am a parent of a Hokie engineering student. She refuses to talk about it. Gets highly upset when I get emotinal about it. We use to go visit her in the Corp of Cadets each weekend. She put a stop to that last year and we aren't allowed around the memorial. She refuses to talk about it. The only thing she has ever said to my husband is she was locked out and couldn't get to safety. Which I had nightmares over. I believe the two of them have talked but have kept me out of it. My nephew says that I don't want to  know. Her friends say she is fine. So unless you've gone through it or have been close to it. I don't think people understand how much the little things mean to the parents, family and friends of those VA Tech students and the studnets themselves.

Cathy, I'm so sorry for your daughter. This was so traumatic and Kat had a similar response; she didn't want to talk about it either. She's had a hard time sleeping and is having nightmares. She knew two students who were killed. I'll email you privately. Thanks for sharing.

Debbie..this is a BLRGUY cameo alert...LOL As you know,I hate the dreaded NY Yankees....but....if the world showed as much class and humility...it would be a much better place!Kudos to them.

BLRGuy, so good to hear from you pal. This gesture was much appreciated. My daughter didn't get a ticket  to the game, but the students were touched that the Yankees came.

Don't be a stranger, you make me laugh everytime you email!

As a graduate of Va. Tech, I still find it hard to believe that this happened on my college campus, so I can only imagine how the students who are currently attending there feel.

Chelle, it's still so hard to take it in. The closer we get to the anniversary, the more news, it's tough. Kat doesn't like to talk about it. What year did you graduate? My daughter will graduate next spring.
