Long Live The Condos!!!

There are 325 condominium buildings in greater Daytona Beach Area. Quite a number, isn’t it? But when was the first condo actually built in Daytona Beach? Did we have condos 100 years ago? No, we didn't.

First condominium buildings in Daytona Beach were:

Bellair Condos (1963),
Pendleton Club (opened doors June 15, 1963),
Landmark
condominiums (June 30, 1963).

The new concept proved popular, and majority of area condos were built in the next 10-15 years. This was the time of conquering the Beach. Daytona Beach only had few expensive single family homes and motels/hotels, and here came the construction boom, and cranes were everywhere, and condos were coming out of the ground and were shooting to the sky.

Mid-rise and high-rises were growing like mushrooms after the rain, and they transformed the skyline to what it is now.

This terrific condo concept allowed people with moderate means to live on the beach, to own a condo in oceanfront building.

And today, like it was 40 years ago, the most affordable way to live on the beach is in a condo.

Daytona CondosAnd, by the way, the granddaddies of Daytona Beach condos are still thriving and are still a terrific buy. They are still great places to live.

Bellair condos, which is a gated community right across the street from the ocean.

Riverfront Landmark, with 4 units per floor, and 8’6” ceiling, located across from Daytona Marina.

Riverfront Pendleton Club, which is the only building with a doorman (until recently it was 24/7, but they cut the hours now) with its dock, their own boat ramp… the only building I know that has a bomb shelter in the basement, a sign of times...

Yes, you no longer will buy a condo there for $25,000, but they are still affordable, allowing to share with others the beauty of the ocean or the river.

I believe condo high-rises is the the way of the future. It is the most responsible and environmentally friendly way of living.

Leave the land to the beasts...

Long live the condos!!!

"The most affordable way to live on the beach is in a condo".

So true, Jon.  With beachfront land in Florida priced at $20,000 - $50,000 per front foot, very few people can afford the lot.  The Condo provides the opportunity for way less money.

Fred - yep, not the land, and not the taxes that would be on the house even if one could build it.

Great post about the history of condos in your area.  Your should have cropped the "product placement" out . . .

Carla - thanks. "Product placement?" Do you mean the link? I thought I am still in real estate, though :)

Jon, those are some interesting facts that only a local Realtor like you who knows the area well will be able to tell!  Thanks!

Silvia - local agents do not know it. I was trying to dig for some time, and nobody could answer. Looks like we are not that curious :)
