A Car is a Weapon; Is Auto Insurance Mandatory in many states? YES

I'll tell you why!

It’s not to protect our new Audi, or our youngest child's beater of a car or our late model luxury car as much as it is to protect our neighbors, our fellow townspeople and any other drivers that could be involved in a collision with us. It could be a tourist, our pharmacist, our grocer, our Realtor or our Home Stager. Whoever it is I am sure we don’t want them to suffer financially due to your having inadequate insurance; right?

Whether we drive very little or drive long distance frequently we should always have full coverage and then some. In the case of someone actually plowing into us and they have marginal or no coverage we should have what is referred to as an:

Underinsured and Uninsured Motorist Insurance.

I had heard of this however it came to light recently when one of my clients was in a bad accident. The other driver crossed over the center-line and hit her head on. She was badly injured and required hospitalization and surgeries. The loss of work for her and her husband (she needed 24 hour care so he could not work) was a huge financial burden. The better the insurance policies we have (collectively) the better it is for all when the thing happens to us that never happens to us.

A lot will hinge on whether or not the other driver's policy will cover any of the extra expenses. Not just the huge hospital bills but the loss of work and general debilitation that comes with such severe injuries. If the other driver had something akin to Allstates Personal Umbrella Policy  there would be no problems covering the additional costs.

Traveler’s Insurance has an Umbrella Policy as do most other companies.

I know I am going to get new quotes for both the Underinsured and Uninsured Motorist Insurance and the Personal Umbrella Policy .
