My bother Larry came to visit me in Cape Canaveral with his girlfriend Skyy recently and triggered memories of my time in Key West in the seventies. He returned from a side trip to the Keys with photos of the old "900 Bar" where I used to play my guitar and sing. I could have played "Sloppy Joe's but needed to book in advance and we only stayed a month. During the day, we would dive for conch shells on Smather's Beach and sell them to the tourists and at night, I would play music. It was a carefree lifestyle at the time but everyone grows up eventually :-) I still remember playing my guitar at Mallory Square while watching the sunset celebration with my guitar case open ready to accept tips. Read my short story "Shark Tooth Music". (Reader Discretion Advised)
I played what was then called the 900 bar on Simonton St. in 1976. It is now "Bobby's Monkey Bar" and apparently is very "gay friendly". My brother Larry took the following photos on his trip to the Keys with his girlfriend last week but opted not to go inside :-). How times change!
I played my guitar on top of the horseshoe bar until 4 am and still had shots of tequilla and peppermint schnapps lined up in front of me as tips. They were three for a dollar!!
Fortunately, I had a designated driver and vowed never to drink tequilla again :-)
Me playing the Cocoa Beach Pier in the nineties.
