On 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour. If the greenhouse reduction achieved in the Sydney CBD during Earth Hour was sustained for a year, it would be equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year.

Sydney icons like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House turned their lights off, and citizens held unique events such as weddings by candlelight -- the world took notice. Inspired by the collective effort of millions of Sydney residents, many major global cities are joining Earth Hour in 2008, turning a symbolic event into a global movement to reduce global warming.

Here's the deal:  On March, 29, 2008 at 8pm, you simply turn off all of your lights for one hour.  THAT'S IT.  There's nothing else to it.

In order to be counted, please go to EarthHour.org and sign up.  You will be given your own unique URL that you can pass on to your friends, family and blog readers.  You can check in regularly to see how many people you are influencing to join the EarthHour movement.  Come on, what have you got to lose?

The Earth Hour website is full of interesting facts and info about how to get involved.  They have a ongoing count of the number of individuals, businesses, organizations and schools that have signed up.  I am proud to say that Canada is currently the country with the most sign ups, so I encourage all of my countrymen and women to sign up now!

I'll check it out Howard! Thanks! Must be you have to check in before one turns out the lights? Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense trying to check it out???

Send a reminder to my email on the day and I will join you in the dark!!! Thanks!

Wonderful post.  If everyone would get involved just a bit, what a difference it could make in the world.  Nice to know that Canada has the most sign ups.  I'll be checking out the web site for earth hour.  Thanks again for the info.  Dora Baycroft, Prince George, BC
