One of the best little tips I've received on blog fodder......

I remember taking one of the ActiveRain University online classes a few years back with Bob Stewart as the host.  The topic was on how to come up with subject matter for your blogs.

There were several ideas that were really good.  But the one that really made a difference for me was............Ta Da!!  Email!!

Yes, that's right.  Regular old email.

It made so much sense to me.

What better subject matter to write about than those issues, problems, triumphs, etc. that you discuss with your clients and affiliates via email?!  It's real, it's current, it's meaningful.

Your direct experience with that issue is probably one of the most primary sources of information on that topic.  Chances are you had to confer with other people and go through a discovery process in order to get to some kind of resolution with that particular issue, which makes for the most interesting reading to keep the viewer ENGAGED to your blog.

Topics involving conflict and resolution make for the most intriguing reading.  Not only that, but this type of blog puts into writing YOUR experience with the matter and makes you somewhat of an expert on it based on real, live experience.

Honestly, it's where I get about 50% of my subject matter.  I go scrolling through recent (and sometimes old) emails, and then Voila'!  Out jumps something that I remember being pretty important subject matter.  Not only that, but most of the time it was an experience or problem and resulting solution that would be great to share with other professionals.

I suppose you could also write about something light and fluffy like making the house smell like cookies at the open house, or your Uncle Gooch's water heater issues, but I'm just sayin'............

Aloha!

The more you blog, the more fodder you pick up . . . I went out today and got 3 localism posts that will be fodder.  Emails have been a great resource tool!!  Good post and nice to see you, it's been awhile.

Wow, the content of your post was not what I was expecting. What a great idea. Maybe I should also take an Active Rain University class.

That's an interesting source for blogging subject matter, so when I finally post something, I might begin looking into my previous emails. Appreciate the tip.

Yes, using questions or problems that come up, as well those via email, can be made into useful blog posts.

I've found that when you get into the blogging "midset" things to write about seem to pop up all the time.

Ralph - great idea. When I'm looking for ideas for my weekly marketing newsletter, I look to both my email and to Active Rain posts. What are agents talking about this week? What marketing issues are in the forefront? Sometimes I get more ideas than I can use.

Great idea! I like the idea of mixing up blog posts; some general information and some specific experiences. Sometimes I get overwhelmed with ideas that are so many things to write about! Writing about personal experiences also gives clients an idea of how we do business and handle ourselves under pressure.

I often turn e-mails or questions from people I get into a blog.  Or take an issue that came up and write about it.  Of course you also do not want to write so specific that a client feels violated in terms of privacy.

Ralph:

You are correct.  There is blog fodder in the emails we receive from clients and just plain folks.  And frequently we must do some investigation to anwwer these questions.

Ralph, emails are where we get so many questions about a transaction and every question is or can be a blog post to a larger audience.
