Fiber Wars in Austin TX ~ Google Fibers versus AT&T’s GigaPower

Google and AT&T are jostling for dominance in the Austin high stakes market. Both are expected to launch their high speed programs in Austin sometime in 2014. Both are expected to boost speeds to one gigabit with service reportedly to cost $70 a month.

There has been a whole lot of anguish going on in Austin over Google Inc.’s right to attach cables to AT&T utility poles. Before the Austin City Council brought up a discussion on utility access in their December 12, 2013 agenda it appeared a last minute deal was struck between AT&T and Google Inc. that ended in the postponement of  the Austin City Council  discussing this matter until January 23rd, 2014.

It doesn’t appear Google Inc. and AT&T will buddy up however their willingness to negotiate in private a deal bodes well for the residents of Austin. Spurring competition between service providers is a good thing. Lower costs for the consumer could definitely be the outcome!

It’s prudent to stay updated on the progress and jockeying of the companies as they compete for the high bandwidth to consumers. Austinites are interested in obtaining the latest and greatest when it comes to their internet capacity.

It appears C Spire is also throwing their hat in the ring. Here is an article on the battle of the Fiber Internet customers in Austin. Remember Austin is the beating heart of the ever evolving tech culture and the Top city for tech startups:

Dorie-this is a very interesting story, seems like the carriers are really starting to take the gloves off reminiscent of the big phone break-ups, which I believe we all benefited from.

How many more utility poles are we going to see now? I know that after 40+ years of all underground utilities I now have a 30 ft AT&T pole in my front yard and a view of an AT&T cable through all my front windows.
