Do you use Microsoft Power Point for any presentations at all? Here's the instructions for adding a Power Point Presentation to your Blog. We are going to incorporate it into this post and show you how it's done: Today I will use Scribd.com. There are others like http://www.slideshare.net/, but I have not tested them thoroughly yet.
A couple things you'll want to know first: The two most common Internet Browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Depending on the readers/viewers browser will determine how your presentation will appear. I would suggest always having a quick disclaimer or instructional comment for both platforms. I like to use the following: DISCLAIMER: "Best Viewed with the Mozilla Firefox Browser. Internet Explorer Users, Click on the Magnifying Glass and use the "slide tool" to resize this presentation in the Blog Post Window." STEP 1:
Create your Power Point Presentation and save it as a Microsoft Office 97 format or earlier. This format works best with Scribd.com
STEP 2:
Go to Scribd.com and create an account and then Login or
Just create a user name and password and that is all you'll need.
STEP 3:
Upload your Power Point Presentation into your Scribd Library. Click on "Upload Documents"
STEP 4:
Create your post on your Blog in Active Rain using the WYSIWYG format. (It's the DEFAULT FORMAT for all posts)
Then save your post in Draft mode. Next, You'll need to go back in and edit the post using the HTML format to enter the embed code from Scribd. But first, let's go get the embed code from Scribd.com now. Go back to Scribd.com (I recommend just keeping both windows/tabs open at the same time) Click on "My Documents" and select your Power Point File you just uploaded. On the right hand side of the screen, you'll see the box below. Just click on the embed code and press CTRL+C to copy the embed code. Now we need to paste the code on your Active Rain Blog post.
STEP 5: VERY IMPORTANT / CRITICAL STEP!!
Now go back to your Active Rain post. Click "Edit" on your saved DRAFT post. Now Click on the Tab at the Top of your post and change it from from WYSIWYG to HTML. It will ask you if you're sure, click on OK.
Stripping the embed code to work on your Blog Post.* This is where it gets a little tricky so pay close attention to this portion of the final Step #5. You have to remove everything to the left of the word object, and also remove everything to the right of the word object with the ( / ) . Here's an example screen shot to help you understand and get the visual:
FINAL STEP:
Use the CTRL +V to paste the embed code you copied from Scribd onto your Blog Post. Be sure you put it somewhere on your post that won't conflict or overwrite any of your previously written text. Now remove your post from Draft mode, place it in the appropriate Groups or Locations, and click on "POST BLOG ENTRY!"
That's It! Don't forget to add good "Tag" words for SEO.
Here's a link to the post that includes a Power Point Presentation that Margaret Rome used for a WCR event in Baltimore, MD. DETAILS>>>
Here's a Sample of a Power Point I just put together about Dubai:
Power Point Presentations in Blogs allows viewers who don't have Microsoft Power Point, to see any Power Point Presentation. Imagine not having to own Microsoft Power Point to view someone else's creation! Very Cool!
Now your Power Point Presentations can be available on your Blog, and easily accessed anytime, from anywhere in the world. Power Point is specifically designed for presentations, isn't that in part what a Blog is? Making a point... with POWER!! ~
Dennis - if you can pull this one off, put a link here in the comments so we can come check it out. If you have any problems with it, put a link here telling me to "Take A Hike" LOL!~ Let me know if you need any help. :-)
This should be easy enough for anyone to do, just take your time, and post your questions if you have any...
Brad - Thanks for the easy to follow tutorial. What a great idea!
Dubai, now that's an interesting country. Supposedly they have begun all this construction to make the country a tourist destination so when the oil industry goes bust they will be wealthy from tourism. Now that is foresight. Not sure if I would like to live on a man made sand bar in the ocean though. Here is a satellite pic from google earth.
Hi Brad - now "ActiveBrad"!! I guess before I give this a whirl, I best learn how to do a Power Point Presentaion, unless I just go out and steal other people's...... ;-)
I couldn't see anything on your screen at first either, until I read the comment you wrote back to Michael - gave that a try, and there it is!
Brad, congrats on your decision to make a commitment to AR. Great decision. Great idea adding a power point to a blog. I look forward to learning the procedures.
BRAD - It's late and I'm tired. It's been a long day, and another one is on the way tomorrow. This looks like great stuff, but it's too much for me to absorb right now. I've bookmarked this for when I'm a little more alert. Thanks for the tips!
Brad, I've said it before and I will say it again. You are the man. That's why I tune in! You help make my life easier. What program do you use for the screen shots?
I think I now qualify as a Brad Andersohn groupie. I worked a 65 hour week, FINALLY spend two hours with my husband over dinner and a glass of wine. When we come home and get ready to unwind, relax and watch a movie, what do I do? Yes, it is sad to admit, I say, "Give me one second to check Active Rain to see if Brad has posted the Powerpoint blog yet." While I might sound cold and perhaps lacking in proper priorities, I had set aside an hour to work on Brad's "how-to" Powerpoint instructions Saturday morning and, if the blog wasn't posted, I would rearrange my schedule. There it is. Woo hoo! I will now return to Quality Time knowing I don't have to mentally rearrange my morning. Thanks Brad! ALWAYS love your step-by-step instructions!!
I bookmarked this first, then went back to read it. I know I'm gonna need your step by step instructions to do this! Now, for something more basic... I have a Power Point presentation created and ready to go - but no idea what equipment I'll need to borrow or rent to present it at a meeting (no equipment provided at the location). While I realize that isn't a blogging question, I bet you know the answer???
I'll be back in a bit to answer your questions and reply to comments. Debra (my better half) wants to go out and celebrate with some friends who are playing in town. I may be the head of the house, but she is the neck!! LOL! Gotta go...I'll return in a while. :-)
Very neat, Brad...both the post AND the powerpoint presentation. I have, to some extent, been following what is going on in Duabi. That is one place I would LOVE to visit. Some day perhaps. Thanks for the great tutorial - I have some ideas already.
Brad,
I really like using PPT. I have only been able to embed them when I save them as a jpg file so this is going to be quite an nice asset. Thanks a bunch!!!
Sara
This is good stuff. I read another blog that tried to explain this a while ago and I just could not understand what they were trying to say. (I'm kinda slow about this stuff sometimes because I have dyslexia and I have to consintrate so hard on the word bouncing around I can't understand what I just read) but the pictures really help. Booked marked this and I'm coming back often.
Don't forget to read the DISCLAIMER: "Best Viewed with the Mozilla Firefox Browser. Internet Explorer Users, Click on the Magnifying Glass and use the "slide tool" to resize this presentation in the Blog Post Window."
Hi Brad, As I read through your post, I thought , Scribd sounded like a great resource, so clicked the link and signed up. Well, it seems that I had already signed up, just hadn't used it. I saved in del.icio.us and now I will be able to locate it again. Thanks for a great tutorial.
Great feedback and comments here, I have to run out for a bit, but will be back shortly to return comments, check out YOUR presentations, and answer questions if I can. My last two posts have been fun trying to keep up with! You guys are all the greatest! Cya in a bit....Thanks!! :-)
BTW - HAPPY EASTER to ALL YOU EGGSTRA SPECIAL YOLKS FOLKS IN THE "RAIN!"
Cynthia - it's not as bad as it looks, this was the easiest way to "How To" just watch number 5, you have to remove some of the HTML for it to work. Not too bad for the reward. :-)
Chuck - let us know or provide a link so we can all check it out! Thanks! :-)
Maureen - great google map shots!! Not sure I'd want to live there either, sure would like to visit though..
Ann - I'm glad it worked for you, it's really cool if you use Firefox, Only Explorer has the issue, and even that works if you use the little disclaimer. I'm sure even that will be corrected in the next version of Explorer...maybe not! LOL!~
Linda - see...in 2 minutes you figured it out! It really is a piece of cake. :-) Some things appear more difficult in life, but the rewards are generally worth it!
Adam - come back when you're fresh, everything will be ok, I promise! If you think this is bad, you should have seen me try to figure it out "Without" instructions! Whew...what a night that was!! LOL!~
Michael - I knew it would work for you, I would definitely consider checking out FF. It's a great browser with many benfits. Enjoy making points with power my friend!
Wendy - you love me?....really really love me? LOL!~ Thanks for making me feel so "special" and "important". It's great to have groupies friends like you. Thanks and let's discuss some ideas next week, I look forward to chatting soon!! :-)))))
Margaret - you will need a laptop or computer with powerpoint and your presentation on it, you will also need a LCD projector if presenting in front of a larger group. The nice thing about PPT in a Blog is you only need internet access, but you'll still need a projector to present. Let me know if you need any help.
Jeff - we can have our National ActiveRain Gathering there!! (HUGE SMILE!)
AJ - I'll be your "techie" you just keep being good ol AJ.. :-))
Karen - your link worked and so did your paste of my post! If you are using explorer, the disclaimer I put in the post should fix that. Firefox doe not have any issues, or maybe you are using a different browser than either of those. See if it works using the instructions for explorer, and if not, let me know what browser you are using to view AR Blogs, and I'll see if I can't get it working for you. :-)
Nannette - this was one of those harder posts to make look easy. Glad it works for you. :-)
Neal - glad business is good my friend! This may come in handy to get you either more business or busier! LOL!
Lissa - just bookmark and then use when you need. A time may come when.... :-)
John - that should instill some confidence for others...shall I tell them all you're only 27? LOL! Enjoy the "fun!"
Jeff - thanks for the disclaimer reminder, I don't know why some people aren't seeing that in the post. guess I should use bigger red lettering. Sure appreciate the backup.. :-)
Diane - I use Mozilla and Flock, they work great.
Laurie - let me know how it works. I did one on a Blogger Blog and it worked great. Still the same browser issues though. :-)
Andrea - To save a post in draft mode, just create a new post, and in the box at the bottom of your post, you'll see a box that looks like this...
This allows you to save your post without the public being able to see it, then you can come back later and add your HTML code in the HTML mode. Sounds like a foreign language, but it's really not that bad. Hope this helps. :-)
I think I got most of the questions here, now I'm off to the other post to see if I can get caught up over there! hahaha! ROFL!! I also have to take the kids to the park, so ciao for now, until later this evening, I'll keep the light on for ya, and the door's always unlocked!! :-)
Christy - it's almost the same as uploading a youtube or google video, you just have to strip the right code, then it works great! Always here if you need any assistance. :-)
Brad> Hopefully being #70 to read this post will have some significance! 'Cuz all I can say is, WOW, WOW, WOW! What awesome tips! And the pics of Dubai are great! Why can't we have architecture like that in the U.S? All of our buildings are so blah compared to what you see there!!!
I'll be saving this post so help me along! Can someone give me a 3 month pass off from real estate so I can go to real estate technology school and learn all this stuff!!!!!!
Thanks again Brad! You are what makes AR so fantastic!!!
Dan - it will work with both, and it woks great with Safari on the MAC. Just use the disclaimer for those viewers who are using Internet Explorer. Thanks for commenting Dan, I have removed almost all my widgets just for you! LOL!~ Happy Easter to you and your lovely wife and family!
Thom - You can spend the rest of your days (not just 3 months) learning about Real Estate Technology, and still do your Real Estate Business. AR has charged me with heading up the Real Estate Technology Division more commonly known as RE.net. I will be contributing all that I can to help and support members in this arena. I am very excited for what the future holds here at AR. Looking forward to working with them and with YOU! :-)
Sandra - if you need my help in any way, just call or shoot m an email. I'd be happy to help you set one of these up. It's not as difficult as it may appear or as you may think. Not to worry, give it a try, and let me know if you need any support! It's what I do on and off the job!! :-) Happy Easter Sunday!!
Karen - I copied and pasted your comment here because the screen capture was taking up a huge portion of this post and comments. It was also confusing to myself and others as it looked like my original post! I kelp clicking on things thinking I was at the actual post, but it was your screen shot. Hope you don't mind. Happy Easter!! :-)
I tried to link this to your blog...don't know if it worked. I hit the link then put in the title of your blog. If I did this wrong, feel free to delete it.
I bookmarked, great info and congrat's on your new position!
Julia - I have not found a way to incorporate transitions and audio to a Blog PPT file, but as the technology advances, I'll make sure we are on top of it. There may be other applications that offer that feature, and it may be at a cost, certainly worth looking into.. :-)
very interesting information. I will try it
