Today is my 14th wedding anniversary!
I will save you all the sentimental story.... but it is a good one. High school sweethearts, Marine Corp saga, a friendship that rivals any. But no, that's not where I'm going. This event gives me the opportunity to write about a place that has become special to me. A place that my husband and I have celebrated our day.
A small town in the heart of New Hampshire's White Mountains. Population - 42! New Hampshire's smallest town and FIRST IN THE NATION. (to vote that is)
"The Notchland Inn, a magical location surrounded by the 750,000 acre
White Mountain National Forest ... perfect for a uniquely special occasion."
They aren't kidding. We have spent several anniversaries at the inn.
I remember the first time my husband brought me. I stepped from the car to lightly falling snow. I can't say if I felt suspended in time or transferred back, but it was a magical feeling.
Immediately greeted by Abby, the resident Bernese Mountain Dog, it's hard not feel a sense of welcome and comfort.
The Inn, once home to Abel Crawford's 18th century Mt. Crawford House, and who's tavern is now their dining room, is filled with history and a sense of a life gone by. Filled with stunning architecture, fireplaced rooms and incredible views, it is truly a place to enjoy.
Each room is unique. Filled with character and attention to detail.
They even have a cottage for larger groups or a more secluded experience.
And of coarse, I couldn't write without mentioning the dining! An exceptional experience. They say it best....
"In the evening, Notchland's wonderful 5-course dinner is served in a single seating at 7pm, at individual tables, in a romantic, fireplaced dining room overlooking the gardens and the pond. Our Chef creates a new menu each day. An elegant flair respects the traditional while exploring the excitement of international cuisines. You'll be tempted by the choices: 2 Soups, 2 Appetizers, 3 Entrees, Salad and 3 Desserts. A selection of wines, beers, spirits and cordials complements our menu."
My first evening, we sat next to the windows in the above picture. The snow, again gently falling, pergola lit with lights. I couldn't help but feel deeply in love, both with this place and the man who brought me here.
I must point out that, prior to my first experience here, I had never stayed at an inn. I enjoy my privacy and the thought of staying in someones house felt strange. It isn't like that here. Ed and Les, the owners and creators, have their own living quarters, seemingly non-existant. There really is a sense of privacy.
I won't go in to anymore detail here. I will let you experience the Notchland Inn for yourself.
We won't be going back this year, I am sad to say. At-least not now. It just doesn't fit our busy schedules. But in my heart, as the snow gently falls outside my window as I write this, a piece of me will be there. I encourage anyone looking for a place to stay in the White Mountain region to visit the Notchland Inn. And be sure to share with me your story of your stay! I welcome any opportunity to be transferred back.
Ed and Les, you have truly done a magnificent job creating a magical experience!
