How to Avoid Wildlife Collisions

How to Avoid Wildlife Collisions

Large wildlife animals can be very dangerous to walkers, bicyclists and drivers. If you come upon them on the road, STAY IN YOUR CAR, drive defensively and let them have the road to pass. If they hit your car, call 9-11 but stay in your car as they may come back while you are outside observing the damage to your vehicle.

Depending on your area, you can be at risk of deer, elk, cows, horses, sheep, mountain lions, and bears running across the roads.

Many times if you slow down or stop to give them some room, they will meander off for some tasty food or to meet up with the rest of the group. Honk your horn or flash your lights if possible and it may scare them off.

Avoid wildlife collisions

Wildlife crossing highways can cause a lot of damage all across the nation to drivers and their vehicles. It is estimated that there are approx. 750,000 – 1.5 million wildlife-vehicle collisions in the US annually.

-Dawn and Dusk are peak times for animals to be crossing.

-Slow down at curves as you never know what is around the corner.

-If you see on animal, expect that their may be others nearby.

-Watch for animal crossing signs posted or flashing signs on the highways. These signs are posted because of numerous animals sitings/collisions in the area.

Avoid Highway Collissions

-Seasonal Times: Mating Season in fall and winter can be peak times for animal activity but also spring when the migration is over and the animals wake up and start foraging for food. Summer can be peak times too as if food gets scare, animals move into the neighborhood to check out porches, trash cans and eat plants.

-If you cannot avoid an animal, try not to swerve or slam on your brakes that would cause your vehicle to crash or get rear ended by another car. Call 9-11 to report the accident. In many states, if you pick up the animal and take it with you, you can be arrested and fined.

And watch out for those deer crossing signs. We have several on the county roads and the deer think it is their highway to cross.

Hi Michelle,

They told us in Alaska that moose are meaner than wolves or bears so it is wise to give them a wide path to leave.

I have only had to deal with deer and have been lucky so far. I did hit one after slowing down but definitely did not swerve.

You are so right.  One day I saw a dear cross the road about 100 yards ahead of me. Being cautious, I slowed down to a crawl.  Sure enough, about six more shot out of the woods as I got within 10 feet.  Had I continued at my same speed even through the deer had already cleared the road, I would have plowed into the herd.

Hi William,

We have coyotes here and they are just predators. I hate coyotes as I see them sometimes on the side of the road but usually they are just trying to get into someone yard, I wouldn't want to damage my car and hit one in the street.

We have a herd of deer that cross our main road at dusk. The spend the night grazing the our backyyards and then head back to the river at dawn.

Hi Than,

It must be nice to live very close to a herd of deer that follows the same path daily. Knowing they cross twice a day is a good safety feature for you and the deer.

Kristin, what a great post. We have a lot of wildlife around Baltimore County as well, especially deer. They often are hit by people going around corners, or in areas where we don't have street lighting.

Hi Marney,

Perhaps the community should put up deer crossing signs. It is important to warn drivers about the deer for their protection and the deer too.

Hi Suzanne,

I am always amazed how many say they have had collisions with deer. I have only had one run in front of me and I stopped and grabbed my camera.

Hi Patricia,

Yes we have to protect the wildlife from the cars. Drivers are usually aware but the animals have to depend on the communities protecting them with signs and flashing lights.
