Last winter I did make the effort to get a $10 flu shot at a local Walgreen's. Retrospectively, that flu shot really paid off last winter by helping me avoid experiencing the flu.
This winter I thought everything would be OK without it. After all, I'm normally healthy, have a healthy diet, get regular exercise, and have no history of any prior serious illness---at least in recent memory. All things considered, I told myself I had little chance of contracting the flu. Beep---wrong answer!
Last Thursday around lunchtime I was walking Nathan, our rescue miniature poodle, around nearby Fountain Lake in Richmond Virginia. Suddenly, I recall experiencing a rapid flash of heat sweep through my body and then said to myself, "I'm starting to feel very hot right now. This can't be what I think it is, Nathan!"
Well, it was exactly what I thought it could be. Just a few hours later my closest friend in the world took my temperature and told me, "It's 101.3, and we need to head over to the Minute Clinic."
Lucky for me, there happened to be a clinic nearby at the Willow Lawn CVS that was staffed by a wonderful nurse practitioner. Based on all my symptoms, I think she accurately diagnosed that I had the flu and then prescribed me a 5-day supply of Tamiflu.
To make a long story short, I would highly recommend getting an annual flu shot in the future. It's just not worth the missed days of work, added medical expenses, and lost productivity. Most of us who depend on income generated from earned commissions, like many real estate professionals, realize that having consistent good health is crucial to our livelihoods!
At any rate, I would recommend consulting a local family physician about the flu shot pros and cons and see what the success rate is. It may not be for everyone, but it does help many people.
Thankfully, tonight I just took my last dose of Tamiflu. Within 24 hours of starting the medicine, my fever passed last Friday. I'm absolutely certain those Tamiflu capsules helped!
The geese above are enjoying Fountain Lake, where I experienced my sudden fever begin.
