Does this only bother me? Am I the only one that believes that the call that you are on deserves all of your attention. When I have to be called back to take another call it simply says, "I value the other person more than I value you." Can you put a value on relationships? In our business this happens all the time. Generally, the other call is someone that may be new business. This is great new business means that you are doing something right. I ask, what about old business? We rush to the next call trying to be everywhere and please everyone but does this work? I would say it does not. Honestly, if this happens to me frequently from any one person I will cut them out of my business. I am not trying to sound selfish.

Recently, my best friend experienced tragedy, loss of a loved one. We cannot PLAN everything to go our way and never know when it may be the last time that we speak to that person. Everytime that you end a call with someone you should feel good about how it ended. The person on the other end should know that you value them.

The phone will always ring if you nurture each momnent with each contact. Your chance is not slipping away if you have a missed call. In fact, you may have lost your next chance if you take the call through. I urge you to think about this and remember that you never know when your phone will stop ringing so CHERISH THE POSSIBILITIES of the call that you are on.

11 Comments on Hold On I have another Call!

I HATE THAT!  I always give full attention to whomever I am talking with UNLESS there is an urgent situation going on (very rare.)  I have noticed that people who are like that do not ever call you back.  Because generally with the "hold on I have another call" the person who is calling gets "let me call you back I am on the other line."

I know you are busy, that is super.  In my eyes it isn't good business.  One guy who does the above taunts me that I never answer my phone.  Which would mean during regular business hours, I am either on it, or at an appointment.

I'm with you 100%.  Unfortunately you and I are rare.  I don't take another call when I'm with the first.

Thanks Renee and Kenneth for the response. Again, I think that every person has to be valued equally regardeless of monetary benefit.

You could take their number - call them - and then be assured of being first in line and having their undivided attention ! I have been SOO tempted to follow this advise in the past.

I never take a call if I am on another. I also never allow the "call waiting feature" to dictate to me. I may glance at who it is and unless I know that a person is to call me for some type of emergency I will not interrupt to answer.

Richard and Jo Soss thank you for your response. Maybe it is just California?

Matt....I totally agree!!  I think that is terribly rude to pick up a call if you are with someone or on another call.   I do not do it and the people that seem to complain the most if I do not pick up my cell are the other Realtors.  My clients understand that concept with no problem because they know they get 100 percent of my attention when they are with me.   I also could never understand why people pick up thier phone if they can not talk, only to tell you they are too busy.  Why not save a little frustration and just let it go to voicemail, and call back when you can talk?

I HATE IT ~ HATE IT ~ HATE IT!!!!! although I have been guilty of this on occasion... usually when I am dying to get off the phone. I am ashamed to admit it. I really do make it a point to be present with the person I am speaking with at the time.

In fact I have 2 friends that just don't get this concept. They will totally get off the phone the second someone else rings them. I think they think that I am their friend and I will understand, the OTHER call may be important. What they don't get is that it leaves me feeling unimportant. I forgive them, but each time it happens, it takes a little notch out of my feel good meter with them.

Debra: I totally agree My one friend will answer his phone and before I can even say hello he will say I cant talk, I will call you back! I sit there and think to myself... if you cant talk the why the h~~l did you pick up in the first place!

I have even told one of them how it makes me feel and they still do it! ROAR!!!

Here is to cherishing the moment with the one you are with.

Because of this blog, I'm going to make a new  message so that when I'm on with someone, I tell the new caller that when I'm talking with you, I'll give you my undivided attention, which is why I'm not talking this call right now.  I'm giving someone my undivided attention.  I'll treat you the same.  Please leave your message and I'll return your call ASAP. Thanks for calling.

My sentiment exactly. It is highly disrespectful to toss someone like trash as soon as another call comes in. The same applies with any conversation. If I am put on hold i will not be there when you Get back.

UNDIVIDED ATTENTION IS THE WAY TO GO.

OK I did it.  If you have Verizon, you can call me for free on your cell phone, to hear my new message.  Go ahead.  My phone will be off till 9 AM so you can hear my message.  Please let me know what you think of it.  917 696 0275
