Free Internet…...not much longer, welcome net neutrality.

Imagine you're getting ready to upload a Youtube video to your website about a property you were just contracted to sell.  You've spent hours filming, editing and applying the final touches to your masterpiece.  You hit upload to your Youtube account and BAM.....that'll be $1.00 pops up.

This could be what happens in the very near future.  On Tuesday a Federal appeals court struck down an FCC ruling meant to prevent an Internet Service Provider (ISP) - and who you pay for internet access - from prioritizing some website traffic over others. FCC net neutrality ruling

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?

Suddenly, service providers are able to charge based on the content you watch or the sites you visit.  Want Youtube?  That's an extra charge.  Want Google Earth, that's an extra charge.  See where this is headed?  It was kinda like the extra fees airlines started implementing for luggage, and we all know how ridiculous that's gotten don't we?

Don't pay and you can't watch or utilize the service.  Think this will affect your marketing and SEO as a Realtor or broker, you betch ya?

You can thank Verizon Wireless and Metro PCS for the ruling too, read the timeline here.  They've had a long standing challenge to the now overturned law, and in a public statement on Verizon Wirelesses public blog the company said "It had no plans to institute any form of a tiered access program."  Yeah right!

Free Internet, not much longer, welcome net neutrality!

Randy,

I agree, some comments on here think it won't happen, I think they're burying their head in the sand

Marshall,

You're comparing apples to oranges, and interpreting the definition as something completely different.  This ruling opened the door which allows the ISP's to charge for different content usage (tiering), we can still access whatever we wish to, but there will be a fee associated to use it.  Yes you paid for your airline ticket, however if you want to fly with us, you're going to pay for your luggage as well.  Same, same here my friend.

John,

I'd say write your congressman and senator, however, keep in mind this was the governenment that dropped the ball, namely the FCC, a government entity, by a poorly written law that has been slowly chipped away at by the large carriers.  They finally prevailed on Tuesday and have cracked the door open, they're going to kick it in very shortly

The last word on this issue hasn't been spoken yet. The current FCC Chairman may yet gather enough courage to make a change.

Eric,

I agree, this fight is far from over, it has though cracked the door enough for precedence and the circling carriers to charge us until told otherwise

Sorry for the misunderstanding. What I was trying to clarify, poorly it appears, is that the court ruling doesn't provide net neutrality it stifles it. BusinessWeek has explained it much more clearly than my attempt - and offered a possible solution.

Marshall,

No problem, its a little difficult to understand, who did what, what it all means etc.  I think the "fix" will be a long fought court battle

I am hoping this is a ways off, but it may not be.  If it happens, we will be taking a step backward, as people will look for other ways to do things besides the internet.  It will probably kill social media, if they start charging for that, which I really don't see that happening.  We will just have to write to our government and hope for the best.

William,

I think it's already upon us, not sure it'll necessarily kill social media, only cause a new approach to its use

Lisa,

I'm with you, hoping, but remaining cautiously optimistic, not sure that it's a viable strategy though.

Alex, sounds a little like cable TV to me. We will give you so many free sites, but if you want to be on YouTube, that will be extra, oh, and you want to be on Trulia, that will be extra. I can see this coming in the future, and although it may not destroy social media, it will only be for those businesses that can afford it. We Realtors can go back to face-to-face interaction, and hand written notes.
