Furnishing long, narrow and open spaces is a design challenge for many. People tend to either mash furnishings against walls or leave one end of the room heavier than the other.
No worries, just split it up!...and always start with a plan. If you are in such a space now and not quite feelin it, empty out and start from scratch. Each section or space should have a specific purpose. If you are furnishing to sell then the dining area should be a dining area.
Not selling...or just moving in like this example....it's your living space of course do what works for you and how you live! It won't look out of place if it's set up in a way that make sense and that is why a plan is key. You achieve sensible spaces by defining your areas and using your stuff to create borders. Remember it's always best to have dead space behind, not in front. This creates flow. No mashing allowed:)
Sometimes long narrow living areas have wall space that can be used to split the room. Odd shape walls that may seem akward are really an opportunity to create a focal point and sometimes can be made into a defining border.
If you want a little privacy in such open areas, screens are a nice addition as they cover but not completely wall off the room and are decorative. The great thing about open is the flexibility so enjoy your wide open spaces.
