About Chandler, Arizona
One of Phoenix’ close suburban neighbors, Chandler, Ariz. is a great place to live and work. Chandler is located east of Phoenix and Tempe and south of Mesa. Chandler, Arizona was named for a veterinarian, Dr. A. J. Chandler, who settled in the area in 1891. The town of Chandler began in 1912, with the opening of the Hotel San Marcos in 1913. In 1920 the Town of Chandler incorporated, with Dr. Chandler as its first Mayor.
Since the early 1990s, the City of Chandler has experienced exponential growth, ranking among the fastest-growing municipalities in the country. Nearly 100,000 Arizona homes dot the landscape today and the population has surged to more than 238,000 residents. It is a popular place for families to live and work, with high-performing schools and strong civic services.
Here’s something unusual that many locals don’t know about Chandler: 100 years ago the city had a thriving ostrich farm industry. Today, that heritage is celebrated at the annual Ostrich Festival, where ostrich products, foods and art are on full display. Other popular local celebrations include the Fourth of July celebration and an annual Day of Play that is held each year in October.
