Why Is There Dry Rot At The Entry Door?
It’s the first impression of your place, right there at the front door. Whether you are selling or not, you want your place to look good to anyone who comes to visit. Just think of them walking up to your door and ringing the doorbell and their eyes are wandering. Then they see it, that dry rotted wood around the door.
Sure you wanted to get it taken care of but you did not have time nor did you look for someone to do the work. It’s not really all that big of a deal but there are some issues that will arise because of this.
Moisture can get into the building when the moisture occurs. If this happens now you may be getting water damage inside the home which will only add to your problem.
There is a good chance that the air will flow through the area. The weather-stripping probably has lost its integrity and the outside air can easily blow in; this can mean a loss of energy.
So why is the wood rotted in the first place?
In a word, moisture! That will always be the case. In the photo, the wood trim sits on the concrete slab, which is very common in Sacramento. Any water from the rain or irrigation that comes that way will allow the door trim to sit in the pool of water. Over time the wood will break down.
Over this door was a small roof area that did not serve the area well. The plywood did not have any roofing material on it, so it rotted too! Once the plywood rotted, the water was able to come through.
