Getting To The WHY Past The WHAT Helps Understanding

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

Loving DogIn a teaching or educational moment in real estate and in all other facets of our lives I find too many people simplistic thinkers. They hear the WHAT of a situation but are befuddled or don't root out the WHY?

Getting To The Why Helps Understanding.

Why is there inspection? To uncover hidden problems. Why is there an appraisal? That the property is worth the value being loaned on it. Why is there a significant amount of money put up as earnest money? Good faith by the buyer.

We see this in looking at rules, our own decisions, the actions and behavior of others. Why do we not drive through the red light? We don't want to die today. Why did we move across the country? We wanted to get closer to relatives, further away from relatives, a new start. Why is that person cruel and mean to me all the time? They are hurting themselves from something.

The WHY is instructional for children and for clients. Why do we eat a good nutritious meal? You will feel better and be in tip top shape long term. Why do we wash our hands? Keep those germs away, prevent illness. Why should you be pre-qualified with a lender before jumping in the car and letting the REALTOR play taxi cab service for three weekends opening houses for you? Let's not waste EVERYONE'S time.

You get the point! Even the ten commandments sound like a killjoy list. WHY Thou Shalt Not Steal? Well you are hurting someone else. Do you LIKE hurting someone else due to your selfishness?

I think with teaching, looking at ourselves, looking at the behavior of others, TO GAIN MAXIMUM understanding GO RIGHT TO THE WHY part of it. It is like features and benefits in selling. The car has 350 horsepower. WHY? So you can accelerate easily on those Interstate on ramps.

Get in the habit of THINKING and TEACHING "why" early, often, always..... and an easy one for you.....

Why the family dog? Life is just so much sweeter!!

I've been able to convince sellers to make changes that their agent was not able to convince them to make simply by explaining WHY the change should be made and how it would benefit them.  Excellent post Gary!

Gary,

Great post!!! As professionals I feel we should explain as we go, including the whys of the business. Sometimes time constraints make this difficult but it's still necessary for smooth running deals.

Gary, I love your post. Why? Because it is so true and when we are teaching others, we are ingraining the information further into ourselves as well.

Ken Robinson sheds light on what is happening in our education system... creativity, uniqueness is squashed with conformity and sameness. That is where the over simplistic comes from and much in the foiled no child left behind that sounds noble but....  As for when we are mayor of our town, chamber of commerce cheer leaders, we indoctrinate ourselves too.

I've always thought the National Association and REALTORS should do a series of ads showing the "whys." Too many folks really don't understand the importance of working with a pro - and perhaps, more importantly, explain how many of those same folks abuse and waste our time. Argh! Why. why. why??? :)

WHY is very important. When people understand the reason for something, they are much more likely to buy into it versus being blindly led.

Very simplistic post about explaining what someone doesn't quite get.  But, why get pre-approved if they don't know if they'll like the house <------- actual retort from a consumer.  I like explaining things to children.

Gary:  I agree with Debb above.  So many times my clients know the "list" of do's and don'ts.  They just don't understand the "why" of it.  Once they do, it makes the whole process so much more easy.  It flows more smoothly too.  Can only imagine that for kids, it's much the same ...

GREAT post,

Gene

We were just talking about this yesterday -- the WHY is so much more important.  Is it the commute time?  Being close to grandchildren?  The large backyard that you had when you were growing up?

Save time and money. Cut to the chase. Just ask why. I like your post Gary, it was short and simple. A real estate agent can only understand his clients reasonings for wanting something by asking why they want it.

Gary, the "what" helps you understand the objective. The "why" lets you understand the reason. Get to the "why" and you can proceed forward. Enjoy your day!

Gary, this is the question we should ask 'WHY' - if they don't have big enough 'WHY' to buy or sell real estate, can we really help them? (Yes, we need to learn to ask 'WHY' followed by the process - WHAT to do.)
