Setting Up Your Home Office for Success
Have you ever considered your own personality when deciding where to set up your home office?
For instance, if you are an introverted, systematic personality, you need a quiet, out of the away space with plenty of closed storage so that everything can be filed away daily. A clean desk to start the day will allow you to be more productive. Clutter around the room will distract your brain and make focusing on the task at hand more stressful for you.
If, however, you are an extrovert and your office space is far away from the “hub” of the home, you will likely spend very little time there. Being afraid you’ll miss something and wanting human contact, you’ll be out visiting. Perhaps you and your laptop will be working from the sofa with a pile of “to do” papers strewn about the coffee table.
A “piler,” as opposed to a filer who wants everything put away out of sight, may be a more visual person who has difficulty remembering to complete tasks that have been placed out of sight. One way to achieve organization and neatness while keeping important items visible is to use a literature sorter. By labeling each cubbyhole, papers are more likely to be put away instead of being added to a pile, and others can also put items in their proper place.
In the Myers-Briggs way of saying things, the office of an ISTJ is going to look and function much differently than an ESFP. (Google search will take you to many online versions of personality tests for more information).
The point is – you don’t need to feel guilty about how you do life & business. Arrange & organize your office for your particular personality style. Know yourself, and set your office up in a way that makes your long-term success more likely, instead of trying to do it someone else’s way.
