Volunteer- Lead Positive Change for You and Your Community

I live in Montgomery County Maryland one of the most affluent counties in the United States. With that kind of distinction, you would think all the residents would know that littering is a bad thing. It's ugly, sets a bad example for kids and it's bad for the soul. But even in this affluent county, people litter. It's a fact. Some people toss beer cans in the woods, not the recycling bin, because it's easier.

This presents us with a few choices

  • We can feel sad & self righteous then angry
  • We can complain and demand the county leaders do something
  • Or....we can organize a group of really cool volunteers and pick up trash

I prefer the last choice and so this morning, I volunteered to pick up trash at a local park.  Montgomery County Parks is honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr with opportunites for service.

"Everybody can be great because everybody can serve"

Montgomery County Parks provided bags and gloves and 21 volunteers filled 28 bags of trash and 17 bags of recyclables. It was a wonderful way to meet neighbors and local high school students who needed to fulfill community service hours. Why should we keep parks and forests clean? Children and adults needs clean, rodent free areas to relax and have fun.  The park we volunteered to clean has tennis and basketball courts a soccer field, swing sets and an area for bocce ball. The park is surrounded by woods with trails for hiking. If a park is clean, it's more likely people will use it with care.

You don't have to be Rachel Carson or John Muir to save the World, you just have to believe, like they both did, that one person can make a difference"

Victoria and Marshall, please know how very WONDERFUL you are for doing this!!!  It is a thankless job and I SO appreciate those who are hiking down the highways and byways with their picks, gloves, bags and whatnot cleaning up those stretches. I love it when there are signs that go up representing groups that sponsor those parts of the roads for regularly doing maintenance. Do you guys have that in your area?? It's nice to have recognition for doing things like this.

Thank you Gayle

We do have the signs showing groups or organizations sponsoring a highway. Clean ups and other environmental events are good for the community and an added bonus is the time spent with our two children. It's important to us that they feel like they can make a difference.

BTW-Marshall is from The Dalles Oregon. Last summer we had a great time rafting the Deschutes River in Bend and hanging out in Portland.
