Bad DayI don't know what it is with some Realtors I talk to. They make it sound like "normal" is being in an "up" state with their "A" game for clients every day, all the time. Sharp and polished. Never stumbling. Can answer every question. Dressed to the nines. Immaculate wardrobe and clean car. Nice to shoot for? Absolutely. Reality every day? I don't think so.

We all have bad days, and I'm here to declare

       BAD DAYS ARE COOL.

You want to be in on a little secret? Realtors (and for that matter Stagers and other professionals you may deal with) are HUMAN too.

The source of a bad day may be a health problem, a family crisis, an exhausted state. Why we think we need to frown on someone having a bad day (see photo) compared to the sea of positive silly heads around us is ridiculous. Even something as mild as not getting enough sleep or coming down with a cold can get your whole focus off track for the day.

Then there may be the behind the scene things why someone may be short tempered or low energy or sad. A big fight with the spouse, an illness or impending surgery, a family death or maybe today their dog of 13 years died. Maybe there is a financial struggle or concern if someone will make it out of the ICU. In our little human community a) we need to cut each other some slack and more important b) don't be too hard on yourself if today is the day you've been tagged as "having a bad hair day so to speak." Life ebbs and flows. Today's torrential downpour of rain that made you get to your meeting 30 minutes late through slow traffic is followed by a beautiful sunny spring day with all the blossoms blooming.

Bad days are cool. Just remember they are not the end. There's always more to the story. Be kind to others and yourself.

GARY- If some one is truly up all the time, they are either really manic, or on drugs, or maybe both.  Sometimes on those off days, I will just say the heck with work, and go home, walk the dog, and read a book.  I work enough not to feel guilty about one day!

03/19/2008 04:03 PM by Carol Lee Realtor ® Agoura, Oak Park, Westlake CA Homes (Coldwell Banker Residential)

If it weren't for bad days what would we have to judge our good ones by, or a bad day makes a good day feel great.. Have a great Day!! or at least ..Don't have a not so good day!!

03/19/2008 04:04 PM by Steve Loynd, Alpine Lakes Real Estate Inc., Loon Mt, NH.

I had a"bad day" yesterday, but today was so much better!  Isn't that what being in real estate is all about?

03/19/2008 04:09 PM by Chelle Gassan-NOVA Realtor and Stager (Weichert, Realtors and Staged Homes VA)

We always need to consider what someone else may be experiencing before we prematurely judge---because tomorrow, it could be us!

Perfect timing, Gary.  I've been taking pain meds for an extracted tooth and will not get behind the wheel of a car while taking them.  I've been taking / returning calls and explaining my situation.  I'm hoping those callers will wait for me to feel fully functional and not move on to another agent.

I did receive a get well email from a client which brightened my week!!

03/19/2008 04:16 PM by Roswell Georgia Real Estate Agent - Nancy Rivera (RE/MAX Leading Edge in Roswell Ga)

There are "good days" and "bad days." You have to appreciate and learn from all of it just the same. I'm thankful to just have another day. Great post Gary.

03/19/2008 04:17 PM by Eugene Jones (Royster Real Estate)

Gary, if it weren't for the bad days, we'd not appreciate the good ones!

03/19/2008 04:36 PM by Barbara S. Duncan ABR, CRS, GRI, e-PRO Searcy AR (RE/MAX Advantage)

Gary - thanks for the reminder. I know we always have our "game face" on . . positive, upbeat, etc. But we all are human too with the same challenges as everyone else.

03/19/2008 04:44 PM by Sharon Paxson (Prudential California Realty)

Great perspective, the bad days make us appreciate the good ones. It really is our perception though because a bad day is labeled that by us Just because it rains, does that mean it has to be a bad day? Maybe yes, maybe no, depending what else happens along the way I suppose. If you actually really pay attention you could have a bad morning and a great evening. That old roller coaster effect.

03/19/2008 04:47 PM by Gary Woltal - REALTOR® Dallas Ft. Worth (Keller Williams Realty)

Gary,  I know some of those agents you were talking about, always having a wonderful day.  My first thought when I hear their upbeat perky attitudes is - you are so full of ----, I think most people feel that way too.  I know I much prefer an honest answer when I ask how things are going than to have an agent give me that ol' upbeat,  Fantastic, things are going just wonderful.  I know my market and I know that just ain't so.  We all have good days and bad days and someone who is perpetually in a state of happiness is just plain not an honest person.  That's my take on it anyway.

Gary ~ I find that my bad days make the good days even better!

03/19/2008 05:03 PM by Kathy Passarette, L.I. Staging/Decorating (Creative Home Expressions)

Gary- First, I just love your posts! They are always so thought provoking! I don't have bad days very often, and I don't let them throw me. In fact, I like to occasionally wallow in self-pity, and a day of being pissy usually leaves me feeling very refreshed! I used to be the kind of person who always tried to make someone having a bad day feel better. Now, I indulge them...and steer clear!

03/19/2008 05:18 PM by Elaine Manes IRIS~Colorado Stager ~ A Wonderful Space, LLC (A Wonderful Space, LLC)

Sandra: I'm glad you live in reality too, and as was said earlier Ms. Perky can't be perky all the time.

Kathy: I agree.

Elaine: Thanks. When people are struggling we can try to uplift them, but there's not a magic wand to turn a really tough day around instantaneously. A smile never hurts anyone and usually is much appreciated along with a listening ear.

03/19/2008 05:25 PM by Gary Woltal - REALTOR® Dallas Ft. Worth (Keller Williams Realty)

Gary, if we didn't have bad days we couldn't appreciate the good ones. This is life..........great post.

Gary:  Well, I've had a "gloomy" day; I wouldn't call it bad.  Just a little out of sorts whereas yesterday I was on top of the world.  I woke up late... very unusual for me and the day just seemed not to get any better.  I have worked but I'm slow as a turtle.  Thanks for the reminder that it's O.K.

03/19/2008 05:51 PM by Jan Wood, Realtor (R) - Nashville TN Real Estate (RE/MAX ELITE)

We all have them and burn out isn't fun. Taking time to relax as a habit is a goal of mine.

03/19/2008 06:23 PM by Keith Perry - REALTOR® -West Metro Atlanta (Coldwell Banker)

Missy: Life is full of ups and downs, you are right!

Jan: A blue day is just another day... hang in there.

Keith & Robin: Relaxation is very important. I sometimes think I need 25 hour days.

Gary - Yesterday was FUNNY and what a bad day moment.  My son got home from school and I had to get on him to get his homework done.  Well, he goes running upstairs.  I go to the bottom of the stairs and start yelling for him to "get back down here" and the "you can't play, blah, blah, blah" and on and on!  I finally get him to the table and as I go to sit down I hear this faint voice.......what?  Come to find out, my cell was in my pocket and had dialed one of my sellers......she heard it all..........WOW - I can blurt out some good ones at times - thankfully, this was just a stern get your rear down here and get your homework done lecture.....she laughed, I sighed a huge sigh of relief but SHE DID SAY......It is nice to see that you are human......

03/19/2008 06:32 PM by Leesa L. Finley, REALTOR® (Circa Properties)

Leesa: I've heard some of those "open mike" stories before about cell phones. How embarassing yet funny and it does show you are human. Great story!

03/19/2008 06:37 PM by Gary Woltal - REALTOR® Dallas Ft. Worth (Keller Williams Realty)

Gary - Loved Leesa's story--and you're right it's okay to have a bad day once in awhile, it makes us appreciate the good days more.

Gary, Yesterday was a bad day, but today it was better. I even noticed I hit most of the green lights!!  Simple things can make us happy :)

03/19/2008 07:55 PM by Audrey June-Forshey, GRI, Gaithersburg, MD (RE/MAX Realty Group)

Norma: We should probably write a blog about what have been some of your bad days lately. Misery loves company you know.

Audrey: See the cycle keeps changing : ) I'm a big believer in not overlooking simple things.

03/19/2008 08:51 PM by Gary Woltal - REALTOR® Dallas Ft. Worth (Keller Williams Realty)

Gary - Thanks for your post.  It's a good reminder to not be hard on ourselves for feeling down from time to time.  This market has brought about a time of introspection for me, and a lot of what I've been working on is being grateful, extending kindness, and enjoying the moment.  Life does ebb and flow and it's ok to have a bad day (but I don't let it dominate my thoughts) - it makes the good ones all that much better.

03/19/2008 09:38 PM by Lynn Johnson, Owatonna, MN Real Estate (Coldwell Banker Home Connection)

I use "bad days" as a learning experience. Lately, my life has been very educational. lol Certainly makes me appreciate the good ones.

Gary,

We all have to take life's ups and downs.  The bad is what makes us stronger.  This we way don't take the good for granted.

03/20/2008 08:02 AM by Brigita McKelvie - Lehigh Valley, PA, Residential, Rural & Horse Properties (Vision Realty Group)

Good point. It is important to remember we do not always have the whole story.

03/20/2008 08:39 AM by Rosario Lewis, GRI ~ DDR Realty, Orange County, NY (DDR Realty)

I agree good days and bad days are a part of life!  I find that if someone is having a bad day, don't react, don't take it personal, offer a kind word and you just might turn that bad day into a good one!

03/20/2008 08:58 AM by Dana Forster Realtor, A Home 4Sale Inc, Va (AHome4Sale)

Yes, in the judging department when people are down, we never know what's going on. The next day the person might be fine.

Gary, great post. Bad days can create positive energy once over come. It's all up to the individual.

Have a Great Day!

Hi Gary,

I am a firm believer that if you can learn something or experience something new on that bad day, then it is really a good day.  Embrace the day and learn from it...

03/20/2008 01:54 PM by Pamela Knight (Urban Knight Enterprises, Inc.)

Gary

Great Post! Its true when they say "When it rains, it pours!" But the great thing is, sunshine is up ahead! Im a firm believer in God and i think everything happens for a reason. We may not know why at that moment in time, but in the future we will realize just why we had to experience things that we believe were bad. Everything comes full circle and its a lesson to be learned! God Bless and best wishes!

Gary, great words.  We are all humans with ups and downs.  Sometimes we forget that nobody is perfect!

I think the point about learning something or that there are lessons in our struggles is a very good one.

03/20/2008 04:44 PM by Gary Woltal - REALTOR® Dallas Ft. Worth (Keller Williams Realty)

Gary, You are consistent with your mantra: "Go with the flow" here. Indeed is the wise way to take it. But in the heat of the moment we sometimes forget to look at the broader picture.

The Nature is where we find all the answers to our "bad" days. After rain comes the rainbow. After winter comes the spring. After storm comes the calm and peace, After life come the eternal life... If we only can remember those in our "bad" days.

Always inspiring. Thank you

03/20/2008 07:36 PM by Arina Hanciulescu (ELITE REALTY)

Arina: What I really liked about your thoughts is the order of everything. We "worry" about the harshness of the true winter season or the metaphorical winter of difficult times but spring follows just like clockwork. Therefore we should conclude that there is no need to worry. Worry is rooted in fear and those with great faith should not fear. It is very powerful when you think about it, but not at all easy to flip a switch and be that way. You provide me great insight all the time. Thanks for your thoughts.

03/20/2008 07:42 PM by Gary Woltal - REALTOR® Dallas Ft. Worth (Keller Williams Realty)

Gary~I knew if I came over to visit you on this not so good day, I would find that really I am human. I don't want to be sick another day and am determined with this fever, flu & cold I will get out of it. But that frowny face up there, really has been my perception today. That's when it's good to give to others and seek the goodness in others, then the frown seems to subside. Many blessings to you my dear friend!

03/21/2008 07:55 PM by Julie Neerings~Lifting Hearts ♥ Building Dreams~Utah REALTOR® (Keller Williams Salt Lake City)

Julie: Hope you are feeling better. I was just pointing out every day it's ok not to feel 100%. Many I think who have high standards are hardest on themselves.

Liz: That's funny, but you are right. Sometimes that dark cloud looms for weeks or a season over our head. Just hang in there is all I can say.

03/22/2008 10:55 AM by Gary Woltal - REALTOR® Dallas Ft. Worth (Keller Williams Realty)

Gary,  Thats what makes Active Rain so special, it allows us to be human. That was one of the first things I learned in business life, that our clients come to us when they have a problem, that they forget that we might be having a bad day too!!...My wife is one of "those Professionals", you would never know that anything was wrong in her life , I constantly get reports from others on how amazing she is and how she helped them, when I know she is having her own challenges...

I have learned from her, and others, to not let people know if I am having a bad day, my clients are not calling me to find out how I am doing, but rather how I can help them thru their problems...I too get comments about how "Up" I always am, and how is it I don't ever seem to have a bad day!! If only that were true...I will share this..I just recently got a large client to come and work with my new company because I always seemed to be solution orientated..Its not that we didn't have problems, but that we always worked to find the solutions without dwelling on the problems.

So, I do feel its very important to keep our professional life professional, and if we cant, then hand the deal off to someone else, or reschedule when you can be on top of your game. I feel we owe this too our clients, thats why they hire us!!!

C ya Gary, and a good post again!!

03/22/2008 12:44 PM by Mike Norvell Sr., Developers Capital Realty (Developers Capital Realty, LLC)

Mike: Great thoughts. On the outside we can project an image of the professional but don't deny to yourself what's going on with the inside and if you need to step away from the business for a half day or so to take care of yourself, that's ok. No client, I think you are right, wants to hear a pity party with us. There are some of life's blows we are dealt like you said where we need to reschedule or delegate to handle.

03/22/2008 02:00 PM by Gary Woltal - REALTOR® Dallas Ft. Worth (Keller Williams Realty)

Great post Gary.  When I have my "bad" days, I take it in stride and know that tomorrow is gonna be a better day.

03/22/2008 09:14 PM by Bob Cumiskey, US Army Retired, Your Sun City Center, Florida ~ Realtor (A 1 Connection Realty, Inc.)

Bob: By taking an off day in stride, it does allow you to catch your breath. I recently had several days where I built up a bad case of sleep debt and I knew I wouldn't be serving anyone well, if I didn't get a little extra sleep at the end of the week to recover. Listen to yourself, and take care.

03/22/2008 11:24 PM by Gary Woltal - REALTOR® Dallas Ft. Worth (Keller Williams Realty)

Morning Gary,

Bad days really are COOL! Without them we wouldn't know  a Good Day. Be kind to those having a bad day, don't add to it. Tomorrow may be out turn and we can't always take the day off.

03/23/2008 06:58 AM by Harold (Hal) Place (A1 Connection Realty, Inc.)

Hal: If we are just gentle with everyone that would be the best approach for those having a bad day.

03/23/2008 09:27 AM by Gary Woltal - REALTOR® Dallas Ft. Worth (Keller Williams Realty)

Goodness Gary, How did you get so wise? Your posts which I've had the pleasure to read, really speak from the heart, thanks so much for taking the time to post.

It depends on the situation, sometimes taking the person aside and addressing the situation can really help the other sad, angry or obstinate person. You might even gain a friend. It can be hard to do, but you might gain some insight into someone else's life. Hurt whether it be physical or mental can manifest itself so differently in everyone. Then again they may just be ornery!

03/23/2008 03:35 PM by

Cynthia: Great points. I had to laugh when you said some of them are just plain ornery. Reminded me of what I call the "stubborn mule" personality. There's no reasoning with them. : )
