2014 Grand Mesa Sled Dog Races...Who Let the Dogs Out2014 Grand Mesa Sled Dog Races...Who Let the Dogs Out. Beautiful Grand Mesa is the setting for this event on January 25th and 26th. What's really neat and unique about this series of races is they are the highest in elevation in the world. The dogs are running at 10,500 feet above sea level. Teams will compete in 4, 6 and 8 dog sled races and 1 or 2 dog skijor races. Now most of you can visualize a dog sled race, but not too many people know about skijoring.

Skijoring looks like the dogs are pulling the skier down the trail. In a sense this is what is happening, but the skier works with the dogs to get down the trail. The skier doesn't want to create too much drag on the dogs. A harness connects the dogs and the skier. Skate and classic cross country skiers compete in this event.

The Grand Mesa terrain is perfect for the races. The land isn't completely flat and the rises make for great uphill charges and downhill runs.

The races start at 9am each day. It's winter time at 10,000 feet above sea level, so come prepared for wet and cold conditions, and bring water and sunscreen. The start and finish lines are near the parking area and there are restrooms. Feel free to bring your skis or snowshoes to get to more remote areas of the race course.

The dogs really love this sport. Most of them have a competitive streak. Almost any larger breed of dog can compete.

For more information on sled dog racing and a schedule of this winter's races check out the Rocky Mountain Sled Dog Club website.

My neighbor does several dog sled races every year.  He has 25-30 Huskies.
