After years of seeing me help other folks with budgets, grants, real estate life choices, and such, one of my dear friends asked me if I could help him buy a house.  Before I could answer he said, "you know I only pay $500/month in rent plus utilities and can afford up to $700."  He went on to explain that although he has been against buying a home, he wanted to have a proper space for himself and something he could give his daughter in years to come.  I told him that I would LOVE to help him find a property that makes sense for him and his situation.  I told him that he's already taken the biggest step in believing it IS possible for him to own a home.

He was excited about looking through listings on MLS and I told him that was great.  It's great to get excited, dream, dream big and have goals, but when we meet it will be work.  Fun work, hey that's the only way I know how to work.  I explained we would not be going through the newest listings, but rather to prepping him for the upcoming seminar on March 30 with Step One: Getting his free credit reports.

Okay, so his face went from elated to "oh no".  I told him that it wouldn't be that scary, I've seen REAL scary and we still made things work.  I explained that it would be rather freeing.  He would see everything those nasty bureaus have to say, or not to say, and then we'll start working.  He looked a little relieved, but not as enthusiastic as I.  I assured him that we work over some delicious tea and that it would be fun.  He laughed a bit and said he would get the reports.

He is now off on his mission to get the three reports from Experian, Equifax and Transunion for free at Annual Credit Reports

Oh sure, I could have run and print the three credit reports out for him, but this is his experience to go through and understand.  We will go through it over some delicious tea and make it a fun and not so frightening experience.  Even better, we will see how we can improve his score, use it as a budgeting tool and be a few steps closer to peering into the housing inventory for the spot that he'll call his own!

Stay tuned for more updates and how we progress over the next several days, weeks and months!

Your success if our access, and we love looking good!

Great post... I will have to see what happens next.  I am dealing with a client now that is just finishing up a divorce and is on a very limited budget.  We have opened escrow, but he is a bit shakey on a few things, I know it will all work out, I just have to walk him through it.
