I read a blog that stated it is about professionalism and not whether you are full-time, part-time or a discount broker.  I feel the need to speak my mind.

Let's talk about professionalism for a moment.  Professionalism is the product of hard work, training and dedication.

If it is about professionalism, tell me how many part time agents you know who spent the time and money to get the training and have earned their GRI, CRS, CRB, brokers license or any of the designations that require real education? Not one I can think of.

Let me make one thing perfectly clear.  The term discount broker is a terribly misused term.  There is no such thing.  All commissions are negotiable, there is not standard fee.  What they are normally referring to is a "Limited Service Broker".  I think limited service brokers created the term discount as a marketing tool.  It sounds better to say "Pays Less" than "Less Fulfilling". If you are proving limited services, you are not my idea of a professional.

For most part time agents this is a hobby.  Is it really fair to a client to have an agent who does not spend the time and money required to become good at what they do or to be available during the hours everyone else is trying to do business?

Most of the problem transactions I have had were the result of inexperienced, part-time or less than full service agents on the other side.  Those of us who treat this as a profession spend a lot of time and money training and generally provide a much higher level of service.  I agree there may be exceptions, but that is what they are; exceptions, definitely not the rule.

A parting thought: Last week I flew to Las Vegas and attended the CRS Sell-a-bration.  There were over 1200 of the top agents in the country.  Why were they there?  We took classes to improve what we do.  I met many agents from around the country.  I would be surprised if many or even any part time or limited service agents would spend the time and money to be there for the professional development training.

I couldn't agree with you more. I've really never seen a designated discount broker....errr..."Pay Less" broker.

Randy...

Hey! Hey! I can make a comment on this one :)

In our Florida market the part timers got into this business to make a fast buck when the market was a Seller's market.

What we are seeing now is Real Estate Companies going out of business because the market has reversed. I like it when this happens.

It really cleans up our industry around here. Granted these part time salespeople are causing us a few problems as they crash and burn.

But hey, at least they are crashing and burning. SVW.

Just in case...SVW...Means smiling very wide :)

Great post!  Just like in pro sports we have Professional ratings and Amateur ratings...because there is no comparison.  You brought up an excellent poing on bettering yourself through designations, education, seminars, training sessions etc.  That is about committment.  Those sessions are at our expense! We are not talking about continuing education courses, or mandated training on new contracts...most of what we learn is for service.  We all have better systems, and communications because of that.  Everyone benefits!

Chris - There may be one out there somewhere.  I just don't know any.

TLW - The big problem as they are crashing and burning many get desperate and do even dumber things.  SVW (you will never let me live that down)

Jim - Exactly we are professionals and take this very serious.  The part time hobbyist/ amateurs have not made that commitment.

Hi Randy!

The only letters behind my name are R-E-A-L-T-O-R and I have no problem satisfying my clients or making money.

Alas, perhaps someday I'll be as "professional" as the rest of you.

*wipes tear with sleeve*

Randy,

We've seen a drop in part timers...not easy making a buck in real estate anymore at least in my market.

Market shifts always does this...

No. I probably won't.

I have to have something to tease you about :)

Gregory - The sign of a true professional is to continue to improve.

In Honolulu if you put Realtor after your name you have a broker's license and are a member of the Board.  Realtor Associate means you have a salesman license and are a member of the Board.

Monika - The good agents are still making money here.  The hair dressers are going back to cutting hair.

Would you like to drive something into the lake with me? SVW. (no reminder)    :)

TLW - At least if it goes in the lake it can be saved.  Here in the ocean it is toast.  The Salt water destroys almost everything.

When coming back from one of my listings a few months ago, I saw the funniest thing.  Firetrucks were on the side of the highway with their lights pointed about 50 yards out in the shallows off shore.  There was a honda civic sitting in about 2 to 3 feet of water.  My best guess was it was going extremely fast missed the turn and skipped off the top of the water for a good distant like a flat rock.

Hey...

I wonder if the driver of the Civic is a long lost relative of mine :)

TLW - I wonder how he would do woth a lawn mower?  :)

Randy, I would like for someone to explain to me how they are a professional if they only do something on the side, but then in this day and age when people just make up their own definitions someone will probably come up with one.

BTW, please keep TLW away from motor vehicles and water.

George -  Webster would roll over in his grave over how some destroy the English language.  TLW and motorized vehicles make great stories to read.

Randy & George,

Ines designed a new outfit for TLW.  For use when dredging out heavy equipment only.

TLW if you insist on chasing equipment into or near that lake of yours please wear the proper attire.

TLW, nice touch with the Super Woman attire, but I am thinking more like Aqua Woman......LOL

Ooops just noticed it was Lourie who got TLW all dressed up.........LOL

02/09/2007 09:35 AM by George Souto (McCue Mortgage Co.)

Laurie - It is a good choice for pulling vehicles out of the lake.

George - I was thinking maybe wonder women, but I am not sure the magic lasso would be able to pull lawnmowers from the lake.

02/09/2007 01:44 PM by Randy L. Prothero - Hawaii REALTOR® (Century 21 Liberty Homes)

Randy, that would work, but I think that TLW will be taking her gun to the both of us after these suggestions....LOL

02/09/2007 01:49 PM by George Souto (McCue Mortgage Co.)

George - I am a few thousand miles away, so unless she has the invisible jet fired up I am safe for a little while.  LOL
