At the first mention of snow in the weather forcast everyone goes running to the grocery store to buy milk and bread, but what is different if you live on a Charlottesville horse farm? In addition to the advance preparations for the people, there is advance planning that is necessary to ensure that the horses have what they need to comfortably make it through a snow storm.
- First is a trip to the feed store to make sure that you have plenty of grain and whatever vitamin supplements each horse needs.
- Make sure that you have an adequate supply of hay as it could be sometime before your hay broker's truck can make it back to your hay storage area.
- Get in a supply of shavings or your bedding of choice for your stalls
- Fill all of your water troughs and any extra buckets that you have. It is essential that the horses have plenty of clean water to drink. If you lose power in a storm you may need to haul water from the troughs into the barn for the horses in stalls. Most farms are on wells, so if you don't have power the well pumps won't work.
- Fill up the gas tanks on your tractors and farm vehicles. Not only will you want to plow your farm roads and driveway, but if the snow is deep you may want to plow paths to your various pastures to make walking out to turn out horses easier.
- Make sure that all of the horses have adequate shelter or someway to get out of the worst of the weather. If they don't have a stall or runin shed they will want trees to shelter under and a nice warm turnout blanket.
