Consumers Share Their Experiences (If They Chose To)

The National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association is taking the necessary steps to make sure consumers are able to share their positive experiences when obtaining a reverse mortgage.

According to an article published by Reverse Mortgage Daily, NRMLA's outreach program will consist of a consent form, which NRMLA suggests lenders include in closing packets, that consumers can fill out at their discretion. The form asks for the borrower's name, phone number, email address and the city and state they live in.

The information will be kept strictly confidential and only those with authorized access will be able to look at the information. NRMLA has explicity stated:

"We are frequently contacted by new reports who want to interview consumers who have gone through the process of getting a reverse mortgage. In order to build a repository of borrowers who are willing to share their experiences, we created a new consent form."

This is definitely a step in the right direction.

For a while, misinformation has been a thorn in my side, especially since I used to be one of the misinformed public before I started focusing solely on reverse mortgage. As a reverse mortgage professional, however, it is my responsibility to mke sure the public knows both sides of the argument but I am only one person.

Consumer experience is key but if new sources can have more access to consumers whose experience has been above and beyond, the program can begin the healing process, especially after the changes which have allowed the program to go back to basics.

The more information, on top of all else, is available for reporters, the better off we will all be. The consent form will be a safe, easy way for consumers to share their experiences and, in a sense, leave positive testimonials for consumers looking into getting a reverse mortgage.

While this is simply the beginning of something, it can ensure consumers are getting reviews from their peers and reporters are accurately reporting both sides of the reverse mortgage debate. A few steps, actually, in the right direction.

Hi Phil, I think reverse mortgages can be a wonderful tool for many seniors. I think it would be great to hear positive stories about them. However I think reverse mortgages should only be a monthly payout as intended and not a credit line.

Julie, I think we need some positive stories as well, especially after all the reverse mortgage not insured by FHA went off the market after the recession. There are people who have had a positive experience with a reverse mortgage, they should be heard as well.

Personally, I think each borrower is different so some might benefit more from a line of credit than monthly payments or vice versa. That's the beauty of the reverse mortgage, it can adapt to any situation. The borrower should describe their situation first and then we can both look for the best product for them in the long run.
