When selling or buying real estate in St Augustine Fl we must disclose all material facts that we now about a home; but does that include that the house is haunted? I read an article recently where a Pennsylvania couple actually advertised that their home was for sale and that it was “slightly haunted”. Oddly enough, that same day I read a second article about a SW Florida couple also advertising a haunted house for sale. Umm, not sure if that will prove a worthwhile strategy or not, but it did cause me to think about selling and buying real estate in St Augustine Fl – specifically in the historic downtown area.
St Augustine was founded in September 1565 and is still thriving today. St Augustine is said to not only be the oldest but also the most haunted city in America. Think about it. With the many wars, plagues, and other various illnesses that have occurred over the past 449 years, it stands to reason that there could be a spirit or two still around the area.
Would buying real estate in St Augustine Fl that could be haunted bother you? Everyone feels differently about the subject and it is certainly open to various beliefs. But if one is going to be selling real estate in St Augustine Fl it is best for the seller to disclosure to their agent any and all facts. This would include paranormal activity or any other heinous crime for that matter, which may have occurred on the property.
The law requires all known “material” facts be disclosed, i.e., square footage, structural concerns, age of roof, etc. Items not considered ‘material’ are personal information, i.e., why are they moving, divorce, illness, etc. In my opinion, when selling real estate in St Augustine Fl, it is best to disclose all that is known about the house so that you are not “haunted” at a later date. If in doubt, consult with your real estate agent and/or attorney to be sure of the legalities in your state.
