When I was out in the desert Southwest earlier this year, one of the things that was brought to my attention and the attention of others in the group was the language that we used. In certain situations, I found that I was guilty of using weak words, speaking in innuendos, making vague statements and bringing others into my experiences instead of speaking about my experiences.
After coming back, I have become more cognizant about the words that I use and am striving on a daily basis to eliminate many words from my vocabulary. Some of the words that I am eliminating are as follows:
If: If is the biggest two letter word that stands in the way of success.
Try: Try sets one up for failure. If one does not succeed, the response is often, “Well, I tried that!" More often than not, the person who tried does not try again.
But: The word but negates everything in front of it. I am now learning to replace the word but with and.
You: When talking about a personal experience, most people use the phrase, "You know how it is…". No, they may not know how it is because they may not have experienced what you experienced. The speaker has drawn the listener into a situation that is not theirs. I am now learning to talk in the present tense. i.e. "Yesterday, this happened to me…".
There are other weak words that I am eliminating from my vocabulary. I am learning to talk more forcefully and purposefully. Learning to break old patterns is challenging and fun. I know that I can do this and I will be successful at learning how to speak and talk. I hope that some of these will be beneficial to you, my reader.
