Accepting Mistakes

"Admit your errors before someone else exaggerates them"

-Andrew V Mason

I saw this quote this morning while prepping for the day, and thought it was appropriate because it reminded me of something I saw last week.  On a mortgage forum, a loan officer posed a scenario where they'd screwed up quoting costs, and asked for opinions on the best remedy and how to cover up the mistake.

Whether we misquote a rate or fee, miss an important date or deadline, forget to call someone back, or even something catastrophic enough to ruin a deal, my advice would remain the same - man up, admit the mistake, and move forward.  Not every mistake can be remedied, but "I'm sorry, I made a mistake" will earn a lot more respect from most people than passing blame on to other people, hiding behind excuses, or, worst of all, being that person that suddenly disappears and becomes unreachable when things go wrong.

This is a public blog post, and I'm OK with telling the world a secret....

I've made mistakes.  I will probably make mistakes again.  I do all that I can to avoid them and I'm certainly not careless, but I'm also not perfect.  The thing is, though, I'm ok with that.  I'm not ok with screwing things up (I'm particularly hard on myself for it), but I am ok with owning up to my mistakes.

My advice will always be to own up to mistakes, and do everything possible to remedy them.  Sometimes it will work out, sometimes it will not.  It comes with the territory.

We work in a sometimes thankless industry - we can do everything right from start to finish, work miracles behind the scenes, spend countless hours to help someone, and take care of every single detail along the way, and at the end of the day, sure we get a paycheck, but we're lucky to get a 'thank you' beyond that.  But screw something up?  Miss a single detail that causes someone inconvenience or headache, and rest assured the entire world will know about it, especially in today's world of social media and instant communication.  When those types of mistakes are made, it's never good, but owning up to them will earn respect.  Remaining accessible will let whoever was affected by your mistake vent directly to you, and not to their keyboard.

In the end, I find it wise to be our own worst critic.  If not, someone else out there will be happy to do the job.

John, I make mistakes too. No guts no glory. So with that said I will say I was wrong and move on. Thereis no need to dwell on what we cannot change.

Owning up to mistakes is the only way to maintain trust.  No one is going to be error free.

Taking ownership of your errors is a character builder and people will see they can trust you to do the right thing.

Debbie - thanks for the comment, and I agree...no guts no glory!

Chris Ann - thank you for commenting.  It's true, we should all come to expect mistakes along the way...I think the frequency of the mistakes and how they're handled are the important aspects to focus on in deciding our business partners.

William - I agree, and thanks for stopping by.  It does go to show many people have substandard character, as too many people hide from their mistakes.

Kerrie - me too, being sincere in apologizing, trying to fix it....and then whether it can be fixed or not, getting over it, is the way to go!

John, they coach us to puff the truth but being honest is most rewarding and like you say it will allow others to respect us. I've sure made my fair share of mistakes.

First of all I totally agree with you and as a matter of fact had an ugly conversation that I had to confess someone in our office let a file slip through the cracks and I had to take owenrship and admit an error. Bottom line is either do the right thing or all you can to make them right or leave the business.

BTW - this is a public forum!?!?!? lol

John I am a firm believer admit the error and fix it immediately will go a longer way than a cover up and then being found out about the mistake and the cover up!, Endre

Bob, you're right, a lot of training teaches us the art of puffery.  When it doesn't work out though, we look even worse.  Thanks for commenting & hope your week's off to a great start.

David - it happens to the very best.  I've seen extremely talented top producing people turtle up in the face of adversity when they messed up.  So much faster & easier to just admit a mistake & move on....and yes, sometimes I forget that I make the vast majority of my posts public!

Endre - thanks for stopping by, and you nailed it - covering something up and being found out makes the culprit look sneaky, dishonest, and cowardly.  Not the traits of someone we'd want to do business with.
