Create an Outdoor Living Space

Create more livable space for your home by taking it outside. With an abundance of products made especially for outdoor use, it's easier than ever to create an inviting outdoor living space you can enjoy for years to come.

Relax and Unwind

Creating an oasis of your own is just as simple as decorating an indoor space: start at the ground and work your way up. If you really want to create a warm and tailored space, dress up your plain patio concrete with a stain and polish or a strategically placed outdoor decorative tile. If that's a little too time intensive for you, start with an indoor/outdoor rug. Suitable rugs are readily available in a variety of sizes, styles and price ranges, so it's easy to pick one that instantly dresses up your outdoor space.

Next, select outdoor furniture that is comfortable and durable with plenty of snuggly pillows. Outdoor beds are popular, but it's best to choose those that can be used comfortably for seating as well so they serve a dual function. Drape a luxurious, but washable, throw or two on lounging areas for cold nights and winter days.

Even in outdoor spaces, accessories and lighting can make a significant difference in the ambiance. Comfort and sensory experiences are key here. A storage ottoman is often a good choice because it's great for propping up your feet and holding infrequently used items or supplies. Place end tables next to most, if not all, seating areas so that you and your family and guests can place drinks, books and reading glasses within easy reach.

Outdoor lighting fixtures are available in numerous styles and price ranges, so select a few that give you good general lighting and some that provide more task lighting. Candles are great for outdoor spaces because they offer visual and aromatic appeal and, when lit, imbue warm light throughout the space.

For a little extra relaxing atmosphere, add water and fire features into your living area. Plenty of products are on the market to help homeowners create outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, combination water/fire features and fountains. The sound of water and fire can aid relaxation and help to make the outdoor space feel more homey.

Finally, warm up your outdoor living space with potted plants, artwork and fabrics. Potted plants bring nature right to your seat and create a visually appealing break to furnishings. Draping living areas with durable, outdoor fabric cozies up the space and provides shade during times of direct sunlight.

With a little thought and planning, creating an outdoor living space is easy and can add to your lifestyle as well as to your home's attractiveness and value to potential buyers.
