Great program for Kauai Families! Kauai Habitat for Humanity
As property prices on Kauai continue to increase it can be difficult for some families to become homeowners. Kauai Habitat for Humanity provides brand new or restored homes to families who qualify in Habitat Homeowner basic criteria.
Habitat homes can be found in Anahola, Ele`ele, Hanalei, Hanapepe, Kekaha, Kapa`a, Kalaheo, Kealia, Kekaha & Lawa`i. Here is Habitats projects as of January 2014:
- Anahola – 2 new homes under construction; 2 new homes in planning stages
- Kekaha – 1 new home in planning stages
- Kekaha – 1 repair and renovation project
- `Ele`ele – 1 repair and renovation project
- `Ele`ele – infrastructure and roadwork, `Ele`ele Iluna Subdivision, Phase II

Here are the basic criteria summarized:
1. Income- Home buyers must meet Habitats income guide lines and have a source of income to pay a no-interest mortgage. No-interest mortgage that's great!
2. 700 hours of sweat equity- Homeowners must put in at least 700 hours to help construct home. Family and friends are welcome and recommended to help. This also includes homeowners to be willing to work with staff and volunteers. Then of course sharing your story with others.
The first step is to get on Habitats notification list and there is no waiting list for qualified applicants. Next they will check your credit history. Habitat homeowners must not have excessive debt and be credit-ready. If all goes well homeowners will be able to attend mandatory informational sessions and get started if selected!
