Wellington polo fans were surprised as two Zenni teams backed out from the Bobby Barry Memorial Cup Semifinals.
These two teams are Palm Beach Illustrated’s Jared Zenni, Facundo Obregon, Magoo Laprida and Tommy Collingwood with Villa del Lago/Casablanca’s Jim Zenni, Austin Obregon, Inaki Laprida and Polito Pieres.
This was seen as a strategy to save the polo ponies for the upcoming Ylvisaker Cup. Moreover, this move allowed the next two teams in order and from that bracket to take the positions.
Flight Options (Melissa Ganzi, Fred Mannix, Miguel Astrada and Juan Bollini) started the Bobby Barry Cup semifinals match against El Cabure (Federico Virasoro, Carlucho Arellano, Agustin Merlos and Stevie Orthwein). While Audi (Marc Ganzi, Carlitos Gracida, Nic Roldan and Nico Pieres) asked to move their match opposed to Orchard Hill (Steve Van Andel, Lucas Criado, Facundo Pieres and Marcos Alberdi) from morning to afternoon.
Those teams who were not able to qualify for the subsidiary competed on January 24 and 26 for a consolation match with Lechuza Caracas (Victor Vargas, Mariano Gracida, Pablo MacDonough and Nico Espain) against Faraway (Hutton Goodman, Martin Pepa, Santiago Chavanne and Mariano Gonzales) and CT Energia (Alessandro Bazzoni, Kris Kampsen, Joao Ganon and Nick Manifold) against Los Monjitas (Camilo Bautista, Geronimo Obregon, Eduardo Astrada and Alejandro Astrada) respectively.
The matches for the Joe Barry Memorial Cup semifinals continued with Los Machitos/Heathcote (Steve Lefkowitz, Sterling Giannico, Mariano Aguerre and Matias Magrini) battle opposed to Tonkawa (Jeff Hildebrand, Gonzalito Pieres, Tomas Alberdi and Rodrigo Andrade) on January 23 afternoon followed by a match between Valiente (Bob Jornayvaz, Santi Torres, Roberto Zedda and Sapo Caset) against Coca-Cola (Jeff Hall, Fillian Johnston, Nick Morrison and Julio Arellano).
