book CRITICAL CHOICES THAT CHANGE LIVES.

Whenever you find yourself between a rock and a hard place, stop and ask yourself, “What if the situation is not as it appears to be?”  How would this change your attitude?  How would this change your behavior?  How you deal with a situation depends on how you perceive it.  How you deal with people depends on what you perceive their motives to be.

In the movie Crimson Tide, the characters played by actors Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman find themselves between a rock and a hard place.  They are naval officers on a U.S. nuclear submarine deep in the ocean.  They’ve received an order to launch nuclear missiles within a certain amount of time.  But due to communication problems they are not able to confirm the order.  They have two choices.  Either they can launch their nuclear weapons without the benefit of a confirming order and risk starting a nuclear holocaust without justification or they can wait to launch their missiles and, in the interim, risk allowing America to be annihilated.

Gene Hackman, as the commanding officer, chooses to launch the missiles.  Denzel Washington, as his second in command, argues to wait for the confirming order.  A critical leadership conflict ensues.  The commanding officer is overruled by a technical rule of military procedure and is placed in the brig to prevent his interfering.  If the subordinate officer is wrong, it will cost him his career and possibly the destruction of America.  If he is right, he will have saved the world.  Tough choice!  In the end, the alarm turns out to be false and the second in command proves to be right.  But at the time, neither officer knew with certainty who was right.  If the alarm had been real, no rule of procedure could have justified the second in command's failure to save America.  They were faced with what looked like a lose/lose situation.

When you are faced with what looks like a lose/lose situation, what factors do you consider?  Do you choose the lesser of the two evils?  When time is of the essence and people who are counting on you are pressing for an answer, you must ask yourself two questions: (1) What are the consequences if I am right? and (2) What are the consequences if I am wrong?  Quickly assess the best and worst case scenarios of each option.  Ultimately, when there’s no time to think, you must rely on your training, previous experience, and gut instinct.  After all, you have to live with yourself when all is said and done.  You must be at peace with yourself.

Second, Third and Fourth Law of Critical Focus

What we focus on determines what we believe,

which determines what we expect, which determines what we see.

I agree that it is sometimes hard to step away from certain situations and take a more analytic view. Especially when it is one of those perceived "lose/lose" situations. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and tell myself that I may be getting the whole picture.
