Thankful Thursday, 2/6/14

As many of you know by watching the news, our area was hit by a bizarre ice storm yesterday leaving thousands, over 600,000 people, without electricity.   In our rural areas this also means without water, as well pumps run on electricity.  This also means, for the most part, people are without heat, unless they are lucky enough to have a wood burning or gas powered stove or fireplace.  For those of us with electric ranges, this also means no cooking.

Our power went out early yesterday morning.   I'm not sure exactly when but at 6:15 or so when the school district superintendent woke me by phone to tell me school was canceled, my clock was no longer on.  I'm not sure exactly when it came back on but I suspect after midnight last night because at 4:20 this morning, when my alarm company woke me by phone to tell my my alarm system battery was running low, the power was back on!

It seems to me that if the phone had never rung almost 24 hours apart, I may have gotten a lot more sleep and been a lot less cold!  Being without power can be a very frustrating experience and I especially feel for those with small children.  As of this afternoon, there are still many people in our area without electricity with no hope of getting it back any time soon.

Click here see an updated outages map from PECO.

This Thankful Thursday post is dedicated to all of the hard working individuals who risk life and limb to get out to the affected areas in all kinds of bad weather so that we can be safe and warm in our homes.  One of my closest friends is married to one of these brave and hardworking individuals and he put in at a 16 hour day yesterday and was back out there early this morning.

Carpe Diem and be careful out there.

Susan, I am thankful that you have your power back on. I am thankful that we have a generator that actually works when we lose power.

Good post Susan, it's easy to get frustrated with the loss of power until we realize there are people out there in the cold working around the clock in dangerous conditions to fix things.  My house back east was 100% electric everything, so I'm all too familiar with the plight.

Margaret, a generator has been on my wish list for some time now.  I am going to have to order one myself, just to make sure this doesn't happen again!

John, thank you.  I was seeing so many posts on facebook lambasting Peco.  It wasn't fair!

Susan, we've been whining down here about how cold it is but at least we have power and all the things that go wih it. Glad you got yours back.

Well, I got caught with my garage door closed.  With no power from 5:30 a.m., I couldn't open it to get out even if I wanted to.  Once the power came back on at 10:33 a.m., the first thing I did was open the garage door

With the wind last evening and all the ice on tree limbs, I left the garage door open last night too.

This winter has been vicious.  Not liking it one bit.

Connie, I understand it's colder in most places than it normally is.  Everything is realtive!

I'm not liking it one bit either Lenn.  My garage door opener was closed too but I have an option to unhook it from the electric opener.  I didn't bother though, as there was nowhere to go in all that ice!   I'm glad you got your power back!

Susan.  HA!  That string opening the door manually broke last year and my handyman has it on the list to replace.

You're right.  I just waited until the power was on and then went to the gym and got a hair cut.  I work from home and often go a tad "stir crazy".

Susan-Iremember the ice storm we had in NY in 1991 and I was without power for 5 days. I had 4'ft of water in my basement and the National Guard came to the house after 5 days and pumped it out. My hot water heater was submerged but amazingly enough was OK. You don't appreciate the convenience of having heat, lights, water until you don't have it. Some folks in rural areas were without it for 3 weeks so I was lucky mine was only out 5 days. Glad yours is back on

I just purchased a back up charger for my cell phone.  I saw one in use recently and thought, what a great thing to have in a power outage.  I also have a backup batter (that lasts a few hours) on my router so that I can continue to use my wireless connection on my laptop to watch weather if the power is out.  I guess that tornado years ago has made me a little cautious.  That was the longest I ever went without power.  I think it was 9 days.  I'm sorry for your outage and also thankful for folks who work out in storms to get it back on.

Lenn, I work from home too and it makes for a very long day when you can't get out.  Much different when it's a choice and you don't go out.

Sharon, I can't even begin to imagine 4 feet of water in your basement.  How awful!   And 5 days without power!  Ugh.

Tammy, 9 days?  Ugh.  I am vowing to get a generator this year.  I am not letting Jack put it off any longer.  Just for the peace of mind alone, it's worth the cost.

We've had a few incidents over the last couple of years where we've been out of power.  Once was a few summers ago when a tornado came through and knocked out the lines.  It was 90 + degrees and we didn't have power for 4 days.  Scary.

The other time was an ice storm that knocked out power for 4 more days.  It was 10 degress and lower durin those days.  Again, scary.

Definitely thankful for those that work their butts off to warm (or cool) our butts!

Hi Jared!  We've been out in the summer too and it's a different kind of uncomfortable, for sure.  At least in the dead of winter, you can put your food outside and it will stay frozen.  Not in the summer!
