Shell Knob, Missouri IS known as the quiet end of Table Rock Lake, but it has the advantage of being close to many interesting attractions and towns. Two of these are Branson, MO and Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Whenever we get visitors, ( the first year someone relocates here they will get alot of company) we take a break from boating and sunburns to play tourist.
A favorite with us, and our visitors, is Eureka Springs , only a pleasant 40 minute drive SW of Shell Knob. Read more about Shell Knob Eureka Springs is a unique and colorful town, founded in 1879 when the Basin Spring was discovered to have purported healing powers. The historic Crescent Hotel was completed in 1886, providing a gracious hostel for the elite of the Gay 90's period to travel from Little Rock for the baths in the spring waters at the resorts.
A second wave for the northwest Arkansas town came when it was rediscovered in the 1920's, giving it some colorful history into the gangster era of prohibition. Through the years it has continued to be a delightful area to have lunch or dinner and enjoy shopping at the many specialty shops, or stay at the several Bed and Breakfasts.
Walking shoes and comfortable clothes are a necessity. The brick streets and sometimes steep sidewalks only add to the charm of the restaurants, art galleries and shops which are often manned by the artists who created the unique jewelery or pottery. A ride on the Eureka Springs and North Arkansas Railway can include dinner in the 1920's Dining Car. My personal favorite is a visit to "Bubba's" barbeque. It has got to be among the best pulled pork in the country, and is where I learned to love cole slaw on my sandwich.
One big attraction for the area is the outdoor arena and the live Passion Play. This draws busloads of visitors because of the high quality of the production. The play starts at dusk and runs from spring through fall.
Valentines week is especially popular here due to several wedding chapels in Eureka. Couples return to enjoy their anniversaries at some of the romantic bed and breakfasts. The Chocolate Lovers event lures many, as does the Valentines Ball .
Among the new traditions is the "Eureka Gras Extravaganza", modeled on the famed Mardi Gras of New Orleans. Friday February 16 will feature a Grand Bal Masque and Dance at the Basin Park Hotel (Costumes and Masks recommended). Saturday afternoon will see Floats and costumed marchers on parade, and Sunday, February 18, will be a Jazz Brunch New Orleans Style in the Cryatal Dining Room of the Crescent Hotel and Spa.
A drive through the twisting streets of Eureka Springs will reveal the charm of the past and have you come away with plans to revisit in the furture, perhaps for the Fine Art Festival in May.
