The park’s winter trail system offers snowshoers and cross-country skiers diverse routes that span from gradual one-mile loops to steeper seven-mile treks. A winter-sports enthusiast’s playground, sledding, tubing, skiing and snowboarding are easily accessible on three designated hills. There are also a few hillsides that are used to sled.
In the summertime the park offers wildlife watching. Elk, black bear, hawks, mule deer and others thrive here. The campground is usually completely reserved way ahead of time, however, there have been lots of no-shows before. They have sites for tents, campers and cottages. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed.
Cheyenne Mountain State Park
Okay, so you would like to stay in Colorado Springs – there are many regional parks, but there is wonderful Cheyenne Mountain State Park. Right outside the maingate of Ft. Carson, off of Hwy 115 – If you live in the south this is a great quick park for your adventures. If you live farther up north of Colorado Springs, by all means come and explore.
20 miles of open trails at various elevations and with changing vegetation .http://www.americasstateparks.org/park_maps/Cheyenne%20Mountain%20State%20Park%20Trail%20Map.pdf. Beautiful forests mixed with prairie grasses. Trails are not paved, dirt or gravel, but the ones up and to the north will have boulders on the paths.
There is plenty of wildlife in the park. Now, in the wintertime, bears are hibernating, but mountain lions might be prowling to find some sparse foods (ie. maybe some deer)
All campsites are closed during the winter season.
