DON'T FORGET TO CLEAN THE LITTLE THINGS

The more I show homes the more I know the little things matter.  When assisting a client in preparing their home for market don't forget the little things. Remember, a clean home will attack far more buyers.

12 Items that you should almost remember to clean:

(1) Front Door:  Cleaning the windows or wood at the front entrance and sweeping off the entry walkway will help make a pleasant first impression. If you have the space a blooming plant will give the impression of a happy home.  Always keep the entry free of clutter and toys.

(2) Ceiling fans blades:  The dust that can accumulate on a fan blade may not be noticeable on a day to day basis but the minute a buyer looks up to notice your fan I can assure you the "dust bunnies" will be looking back.

(3) Baseboards:  Don't let the baseboards go without dusting.  Buyers will be looking at your gleaming hardwoods or shiny new tile floors and be distracted by the dust and pet hair that has nested just above your floors.

(4) Refrigerator:  Whether you have listed the item to remain with the home or the buyers are considering making an offer that would include you leaving the fridge you don't want them to see every science experiment that you have.  Throw away almost empty containers. Stack leftovers in an organized fashion and remove any food that has an odor.  Also remove the scores of finger-paintings and notes that you have placed as a reminder of your normal life. Remember.....less is more.

(5) Kitchen and Bath counter tops:  We all have busy lives and the counter tops tend to be the catch-all for everything when we walk in the house or easy access for things we use frequently. Removing the personal items not only make the kitchen/bath look cleaner but it typically will give the illusion of more space.

(6)  Sinks and Faucets:  Make sure the garbage disposal does not have the odor from standing food. A few slices of lemon ground in the disposal gives it a good cleaning and fresh smell. Polish to faucets and sinks to remove any food or water spots.

(7) Tubs or Showers:  Water and soap scum builds up in almost every shower but a quick wipe down is needed.  Scrub any stains with a mild cleanser and brush, rinse completely and clean any glass doors. De-clutter by removing as many personal hygiene items as possible and all towels and used wash clothes.

(8)  Closets:  Storage space is typically at a premium with all homes but remember you are trying to show off your assets.  Box up as many items as you can and neatly store in one area if possible. Declutter the closets and donate items that you don't need or will never use again. Always have dirty clothes and linens put away or in the laundry area.

(9) Mirrors and Pictures:  A quick clean of any mirrors is necessary.  Vinegar works best and will not leave streaks.  Wipe down large framed prints as well and make sure to dust the tops.

(10) Door Frames:  We sometimes overlook the doors where our children have pushed open with dirty hands or the dogs has jumped up begging to get in. Use a wet rag and soapy solution.

(11)  Blinds and Drapes:  Dust naturally will attach itself to something.  Remember to dust the blinds and vacuum the drapes frequently.

(12)  Floors and Rugs:  Saving the floors until last will help save time.  After everything else is wiped down you can vacuum, dust or mop.  Make sure you get under furniture and beds.  Pick up any toys, clothes, magazines or newspapers.

While on the market you should look at your home the same way you would if you were shopping for a house.  What items are distracting for you? What do you look at most when home shopping? Look at housekeeping as homework and strive for an "A" every day.

This is a very good list that home sellers should be prepared to clean the little things that are over looked in every day living.

Thanks Pamela.  It is true.  Just walking in a home and seeing these things overlooked reminds me the things my sellers need to do when listing.

I think I will use this around my own home. Just looked at my ceiling fans. Oh My. Better yet, time for a cleaning service.

Libby,  You hit it on the head with this one.  People just don't look closely enough to their "little things".  Especially the front door since most of us enter through the garage!

Suggested and reblogged - again!

This is excellent advice for home sellers. I visited your blog after Belinda's re-blog of this post.

Have an outstanding week!
