Lessons Learned From The Superbowl

As we all know now, the Seahawks beat the Denver Broncos in a convincing fashion. However, I am not one to believe that the Seahawks are 34 points better than the Broncos. Had the Broncos brought their ‘A’ game and been ready to play, perhaps they would have won or perhaps the score would just have been different. We will never know the answer however what I do know is there are some lessons learned that we could apply to our real estate business.

The first thing I learned was to simply be prepared. The Seahawks were prepared for the Broncos but the Broncos did not look like they were even remotely prepared for the Seahawks. It is said that the Broncos had never seen a defense move with this kind of speed. Maybe, maybe not but this was a veteran team. And these veterans had seen speedy players countless times in their careers I am sure. To think that it was that big of a shock is really difficult to believe. One thing I thought interesting was the Seahawks had a simple defense. It just seem like that Broncos were not prepared and it showed on the field. Selling Real estate is really quite similar. You have a house that you need to sell and when it is time to sell you need to be prepared. You have to know your competition and know what you are up against. You gotta know the details, i.e. how to price it, the condition, availability to show and many other items. All these are details but each one of them handled correctly with excellence leads to an excellent selling experience. Leave out any one of these items and be prepared to let the property sit and have a potentially frustrated seller. Sometimes communicating these points to the seller is enough in itself however, its our professional duty to do so. Being prepared is a big part of being successful.

The second lesson I learned was the ability to respond to adversity. On the first play of the game the ball was snapped inadvertently and a safety followed suit. The Seahawks then scored a field goal. At this point the Broncos are only down 5 to nothing, a hardly insurmountable task. One touchdown easily shifts the entire game. However the Broncos came and went three and out. That was the time when they needed to have a passionate response to establish themselves as "hey, we've already moved on from that error, its time for business", but they didn’t. Sadly they didn’t on the following drive and the following drive and so forth. Your ability to respond in adversity quickly, swiftly, convincingly, in real estate is no different. Problems will arise, this is a people business. It doesn't matter if it’s with lending, appraisals, inspectors (especially inspectors) and other types of issues. You have to be able to respond swiftly and convincingly. In doing so, a lot of problems can be solved and you can keep momentum of the deal moving or at least if momentum shifts you can shift it back. The goal is to sell the property and in doing so your ability to respond quickly to anything that comes up is paramount.

The last take away was simply passion. The Seahawks clearly wanted the game from the first play, the Broncos were flat. Although there were some signs of life late in the 3rd quarter, by then it was late in the game. Where were these signs of life at the beginning of the game? Had they had that, perhaps the game would have looked a lot different. Real estate is no different. Again, being a people business things are going to go wrong and right.

That is a given. However, your ability to show your love and passion for the sport of real estate is not. When shown, it will get you clients, it will get you sales, it will get you Buyers, it will get you whatever you want with enough persistence. People say real estate can be a lucrative business and it can be but what I found is that the people that are most passionate about it tend to be the ones that are the most successful. That love for what you do is amazingly addictive on the people around it. Exhibit that passion in all that you do, have excellence on the details and respond to any challenges that come up and you'll have lots of success. And that is a game I don’t believe is ever in doubt.
