Jerry Rice Motivation

"Today I do what others won't, so tomorrow I can accomplish what others can't."

-Jerry Rice

Apparently there was a football game on last night that was of some importance (especially to our Seattle area AR friends...congrats to the Seahawks on an impressive win), so I thought a football inspired quote was appropriate today.

Jerry Rice is one of my favorite athletes.  Not for the plays he made on the field, but for his approach off of it.  From the beginning of his career to the end of his 20 year career, at 42 years old (playing for the Seahawks!), Rice had an off-field work ethic rivaled by few others.  Going to training camp each year, he was in great shape before practices even began.  He was known for legendary sprint training routines amongst his peers, and has been quoted as saying he takes the most pride in his record for 4th quarter scores.  When everyone else was worn down, Jerry Rice was running past them making plays and winning games because of what he did before the game started.

Across every line of work, this mindset is the same, especially in the real estate industry.  Who are the most successful people?  Usually the ones that go above & beyond the average person.  The one's who put in the extra hours, sacrificing happy hours or family time to grow their business.  The one's that make that extra call at the end of the day even though they don't want to, the one's that call expired listings, FSBO's, and potential networking partners, and look at open houses & floor time as opportunity rather than wasted time.

Fact is, it's the stuff we do when we're NOT with clients and NOT in the spotlight that is usually the most beneficial to our business.  It's the hours we put in that no one sees, the time spent optimizing our websites and educating ourselves on new technology or marketing strategies that bears the most success.  Sure, closing deals and accumulating volume are what people see, and what puts us in the spotlight and gives us a reputation as the best in our field.  People think the best agents and LO's are overpaid because they can't see the majority of the real work that goes on.  Like Jerry Rice, we should outwork our colleagues and competition, so when the time comes, we can outperform them and make it look easy.
